Gonçalo Amaral - Defence Fund/ Fundo de Defesa: Help/ Ajude!

Press Release – Defence Fund

For Immediate Release

The movement ‘Citizens in Defence of Rights and Freedoms – Project Justice Gonçalo Amaral’ formally announces the creation of a defence fund by means of a solidarity account to support citizen Gonçalo Amaral, who has been deprived of his civil right to free expression.

Freedom of expression is an inalienable constitutional right, for which the Portuguese people have fought hard, and that cannot be placed at stake, namely when it is exercised with responsibility and with civility.

Citizen Gonçalo Amaral presently finds himself in the front line of a struggle for freedom of expression. An unequal struggle, in which the parties have access to disparate financial resources – citizen Gonçalo Amaral is forced to exhaust all and any personal resources that he may possess, and which are manifestly insufficient to meet the expenses that are inherent to his defence.

His opponents, who are well aware of this limitation, and who are financed by third parties to place considerable resources at their disposal, risk little or nothing, and gamble everything to silence the former Judiciary Police coordinator.

Gonçalo Amaral desires nothing more than to see this matter duly clarified in a court of law, which is the only place where the material truth of facts can, and should, be established. And we, Portuguese citizens, will do anything to see that happen.

Both parties must have equal access to Justice, and to adequate legal representation. In this particular case, we see a need to create a legal defence fund, in order to ensure that citizen Gonçalo Amaral is given access to said equality.

Therefore, the citizens who wish to show their solidarity with this cause, may contribute with their support through a bank account at Banco Português de Investimento (BPI) with NIB: 0010 0000 438 0385 000 1 62; IBAN: PT 50 0010 0000 438 0385 000 1 62; Swift: BB PI PT PL.

The ‘Project Justice Gonçalo Amaral’ blog – – offers the possibility to donate using the PayPal system.

This action is subject to principles of full transparency and seriousness.

For equal Justice for all, in respect of civil rights and duties of Portuguese and European citizens.

For Truth and for Freedom.

This week-end's story in the British press:

Madeleine McCann detective facing £1m fraud charge
Last updated at 10:15 PM on 21st November 2009
Add to My Stories

Missing: Madeleine McCann vanished in May 2007
A private detective whose company was paid up to £500,000 from publicly donated funds to find Madeleine McCann has been charged with fraud.
Kevin Halligen, 48, is wanted in America by the FBI for allegedly conning a law firm out of £1.3 million by claiming he could help free two men jailed in war-torn Africa. It is claimed he instead spent the money on a mansion.
However, he has not been arrested because US officials do not know where he is.
In another case, a US court has ordered Halligen to repay a loan of £2million to a business partner. And a British lawyer is claiming £1.3million after investing in Halligen’s company but receiving no return on the cash.
Halligen’s firm, Oakley International, was hired by the Madeleine Fund but was dropped after six months over claims he was making little progress and spending too much.
Halligen, who claims a wealth of contacts in the British security services and FBI, said he had infiltrated a paedophile ring in Belgium. He regularly visited Kate and Gerry McCann to give updates on the hunt for Madeleine, who was three when she vanished from a holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007.
In the months after Halligen was ditched four investigators demanded another £200,000 from the fund claiming they had not been paid by him. Halligen’s indictment is likely to dismay thousands who gave money to the Madeleine Fund.
A document filed in the District Court of Columbia claims Halligen took money saying his firm could help secure the release of two executives from the Dutch company Trafigura imprisoned in the Ivory Coast in 2007. The men were arrested following the alleged unloading of toxic waste.
Halligen is said to have proposed a rescue operation by flying in South African mercenaries but it was later cancelled. The men were freed a few months later following a reported £120million payment.
Halligen was last seen in Italy and has allegedly left a trail of debts in America. The Madeleine Fund received more than £1million in donations after her disappearance but was hugely depleted by Halligen’s services. There are concerns the fund will be empty by the end of this year.
The McCanns had previously hired Barcelona-based detective agency Metodo 3 on a reported £50,000 a month. But the company lost credibility with the couple when its head of operations claimed he knew who had kidnapped Madeleine and hoped to have her home by Christmas.
After Halligen, the McCanns hired two former British detectives, David Edgar and Arthur Cowley. In August, Mr Edgar appealed for sightings of an Australian ‘Victoria Beckham lookalike’. But a Mail on Sunday investigation revealed the detectives had failed to make the most basic of inquiries in Barcelona where the woman was seen.
The McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, insisted the fund had not been duped. Two phone numbers previously used by Halligen were answered by a man who said he had no idea who Kevin Halligen was.

Let's hope Goncalo Amaral receives all the donations necessary to fend off these parasites and that the petitions signed achieve their aim.

Now Halligen, who is on the run, has been exposed by the Newspapers here for just what he is - a snake in the grass who has conned half a million pounds from the Madeleiene Fund and is now on the run, supposedly in Britain.

In my opinion it would serve a better purpose if he is brought to justice in America where he is wanted for so much fraud, including a sham marriage, surrounded by highly respected people.

If he is caught here, there is a strong possibility he could end up receiving a lenient sentence for keeping any adverse comments about the McCanns to himself which would keep the status quo intact!

It is just coincidencce that the McCanns have a penchant for hiring dud and very shadey people to find Madeleine.

It seems they need to hire detectives to watch the detectives!

Poor Madeleine - if she was abducted, her abductors must be laughing their heads off at efforts to find her!

Hello, ICTOAN. Great to read you! :-)
And thanks for this piece of news. :-) It's hilarious, isn't it? Interesting people they attract. :-) I couldn't avoid LOL when I read it. Hope Mr Halligen feels chatty if and when he is 'found'...
Hope you're well, ICTOAN!

Cláudia said...

Hello, Nancy!
How right you are. They are really very unlucky people, aren't they? First M3, now this. They seem to attract dishonest people like light attracts mosquitoes. Interesting how they are able to hire the best lawyers to defend themselves and the best PR people to spin whatever needs to be spun but they can't find honest, competent people to do the minor job of finding their missing daughter. Oh well, priorities, I suppose.
Hope you're well, Nancy.

Gina said...

I suppose fraudsters are not bothered where they get their money from and it seems even taking it from a fund to find a missing child is ok in their eyes.

I have always found many things odd about this case now this fraud thing is strange too. I cannot see why he chose to take the money from something that is constantly in the public eye. Surely he realised someone would pick up on it easily. Many people, including myself have always felt the McCanns seem to hire the wrong people and waste the money and as such, always look to see where the latest shed load is being wasted.

Oh well, at least he spent it on bricks and mortar (a mansion) which I guess Carter Ruck will now claim to be the McCanns property.

What a bloody farse this all is. I bet if the McCanns needed to use their own money to find Madeleine they would have been a lot more careful how they spent it.

Hi Claudia and all,

Hi ICantThinkOfAName great to read you again and I love your avatar.

Well said!

From the article ICantThinkOfAName posted:

When I read words such as the above my thoughts just cannot stop words like The Fund, Money Laundering and Fraud popping into my head!

If the conman is found. I wonder what his version will be re The McC's??

Cláudia said...

Hi, Gina.
Hope you're well.
Couldn't agree more. If it was their money and their money only, I bet they would have found more competent and honest people. Assuming they would have spent a cent of their own money, of course.

Cláudia said...

Hello, Zodiac.
Great to read you!
That is exactly what I also thought. Hope he is found very, very soon. And hope he feels like chatting. ;-)

Zodiac said...

Like you I hope he is found soon and wants to chat.

The phrase:

You can't con a con man.

Is something that keeps popping into my thoughts. Imo if the con man has not conned the M's I think he will perhaps want to make that very very clear! Perhaps he will want to clarify just who has been conning who assuming there is a con that is. He might just air dirty publicly.

Cláudia said...

Hi, Zodiac!
I hope so. And if that's the case, I'll get my popcorn, find a nice, comfortable spot on my couch and watch. ;-)

nancy said...

Nothing yet from the McCann team about sueing this greedy, seedy individual for every penny he has or has not. These type of people know the right places to stash their ill gotten gains. Of course, it could be they are very worried about what might come out if they do!

Cláudia said...

Hi, Nancy.
I have a feeling they won't be interested in suing this time. ;-)

Zodiac said...

Hi Claudia and all,

Just my opinion I think they will be as eager to sue the conman with the same eagerness they have to re-open the investigation!

Look at this and how will CR be rucked in the future LOL!:

Jack Straw confirms Government is preparing to reform 'unbalanced' libel laws

Jack Straw says the Government is preparing to reform libel laws
The UK's 'unbalanced' libel laws are to be overhauled, Jack Straw has confirmed.
The Justice Secretary acknowledged the current system was attracting 'libel tourists' and restricting fair comment.
He confirmed the Government is preparing proposals to reform the laws, amid growing concern that the rise of 'no win, no fee' cases in British courts is threatening freedom of speech.
In some cases, newspapers who lose libel actions are being left with bills for their opponent's legal costs that are many times higher than the damages awarded.
Mr Straw said such arrangements allowed big corporations to restrict fair comment.
But media outlets and individuals had to be given clearer rights to freedom of expression, he said.
'A free press can't operate or be effective unless it can offer readers comment as well as news,' he told the Sunday Times.
Campaigners have suggested that libel payouts could be capped at £10,000, and apologies made the main remedy.

There have also been calls for the burden of proof to be shifted, so claimants have to demonstrate damage - rather than the defendant proving its innocence.
It is hoped the proposals will end the trend of wealthy global figures using the British courts to silence their critics. Mr Straw said: 'No-win, no-fee arrangements have got out of hand. The system has become unbalanced.'

:-) I suspect some people might not be too excited about that. ;-)

nancy said...

Hi Zodiac -

I've never been a fan of his but you could say that the man of straw has, with this article, taken a step in the right direction.

Let's hope it doesn't end up as pie in the sky after the next General Election eh?

viv said...

Hello guys

ah the grasping Mr Halligen has been caught, not paying his hotel bill, he is to be extradited to the States and the McCanns bless em, are going no comment again.

Well you know I hear those American Police can be pretty nasty, who knows what Halligen will start squealing about. And there is one thing Kate and Gerry need to realise, Halligen cannot be Carter Rucked:-)))

Cláudia said...

Hi, Viv.
Hope Mt Halligen feels like talking and talking and talking. :-)

Zodiac said...

Hi Claudia and all,

I remember you posted a lot of really interesting information on your Blog ages ago about Halligen, Red Defence etc. If my memory serves I think you even posted up info about the luxury mansion and a link to pics because it was up for sale. I do hope whilst blogging I did not fall asleep at the PC (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) and dreamt it all. If I have remembered correctly perhaps it should be spread around the cyberworld because it was a really good read and very informative.

Cláudia said...

Hi, Zodiac.
Great memory. :-) Maybe one of these days we'll have something else to remember about Mr Halligen. :-)

Zodiac said...

"Maybe one of these days we'll have something else to remember about Mr Halligen"

That saying I have read in cyberworld (these past 2 years and 2months I have been blogging) has been on my mind these past few days and you know what I am starting to think it is a positive saying. I might use it as a mantra now.

Here it is:

It will be the Fund that gets them in the end!

Only now (imo) I think perhaps it will not just be the two who left their three children all aged 3 and under unsupervised whilst they ate and drank elsewhere. Perhaps there will be a plethora of people the Fund will get in the end. Also I believe Civil Law has no bearing on Criminal Law and Criminal Law supercedes Civil Law therefore Halligen perhaps would be impermeable to threats of super-injunctions! Oh and just think! What if the Fund was frozen? What if there is an investigation? Hmm what kind of hindrance would that
have on the supposed search for the mysteriously disappeared child? Would the McC's sue whoever froze the Fund? Hmm what knock on effect would that have on Dr GA? The man who wrote a book based on case files (now publicly available)that were created when he was the first Senior Investigating Officer into the case of their missing 3-yr-old child. The man whom the parents of the mysteriously disappeared child claim is causing a hindrance in their supposed search for their child they claim was abducted. The man they are sueing for 1.2 million Euro's (or maybe more!) and have used the law to freeze his assests in the hope of leaving him unable to defend himself in Court. Hmm how would they defend themselves if they find themselves in the frozen assets situation they have placed Dr GA in?

nancy said...

I would imagine the Loss side of the McCann family Fund's Accounts will show a considerable sum down the plughole bearing in mind the huge sums they've paid out to bogus detectives and the like, and of course, not forgetting a probable huge amount to the PR Company in Portugal to enhance their images - something which has been a complete failure so far!

I'm surprised there have been no complaints from the people who have sent their hard earned cash to the Fund in little brown envelopes!

The saga continues - let's hope Halligen's arrest leads to something positive, but while he is still in this country I very much doubt it.

nancy said...

Halligen is refused bail - surprise, surprise.

Why? he obviously had no intention of running anywhere as he stayed at the same hotel so long that one young chap working there reported him after recognising his face in the Sun. It was almost as if he wanted to be caught.

If he was on the run and didn't want to get caught he would have used different tactics (like the Fugitive of TV fame) and moved around the country surely.

Let's see if he gets extradited to the USA - he may be, but not before some unfinished business in this country is sorted I bet.

Something really fishy about the McCann connection with this man. And I think we've only seen the tip of the iceberg.

And Brian Kennedy's name always crops up when something shady is going on!

Cláudia said...

Hello, ladies. :-)
Hope you're well.

Zodiac, remember Al Capone? Money, money, money. Who knows?

Nancy, thanks for the news. Hope he is extradited. Bet it will make him wanna talk a bit more. ;-)

nancy said...

Hi Zodiac -

You make a very valid point and I'm sure their famous solicitors have made them aware that could happen. I wouldn't be surprised if the McCanns are not preparing to feather their nests with plans in the pipeline to do a film and unending books if the Fund's assets were frozen.
It would not help their tarnished image, but it wouldn't be illegal if they did and kept the money themselves.

I have a feeling some other publicity stunt is just around the corner and even more people will start to doubt them. However, I'm sure there are still a few rich sycophants who have blind faith in the McCanns who will give freely to their cause.

nancy said...

Hi Claudia,

How are things with the family now? I hope you are having a less stressful time now.

Has there been any news about the forthcoming trial with Goncalo Amaral and the McCanns? I'm sure not, as we would have trickled through to the McCann Files and Joana Morais by now, but just wondered if things are moving.

Also have this PR company managed to help the McCann's tarnished image or is it having the opposite effect?

On a personal note, I'm well thanks and have had my flu jab, so hopefully won't succumb to anything worse than a heavy cold this winter!!

As they say in Spain, and I'm sure in Portugal - 'si Dios quiere' (God willing).

Cláudia said...

Hi, Nancy! :-)
Thanks for asking. Uncle very weak and finishing today his 6 week radiation therapy phase. Quite difficult side effects but let's hope that it will get easier as soon as he finishes them (assuming he won't have to do more sessions soon). Family adjusting to the reality. Thanks for your kind words.
I haven't heard anything new about the trial (these court things go very slowly).
The PR company is and will always be a waste of money. At least here in Portugal. There is no amount of money able to reverse the effects of their actions. And I think they know that very well. People have their minds made up for more than two years. One way or another. Here in Portugal, the vast majority being one specific way which is not to the their liking, obviously.
My dad has already had his flu jab too. He has had it for some years now. My mum never did because she has never had a flu. Quite an achievement for a 66 almost 67 year old. As for the swine flue (A flu here in Portugal) some of my kids have had the flue (which one we don't know because they only test it in the lab if the person belongs to a risk group) but up until now I have escaped it. Let's hope it continues this way.
Si Dios lo quiere. :-)

nancy said...

Hi Claudia -

Thanks for the update on your family news. I hope and pray there is a happy ending.

We've had sporadic cases of swine flu and some of them have been fatal, although most people have got over it.

Imagine your Mum never having flu!! Not many people can say that.

Money spent on those PR people can be added to the list of money wasted by the McCanns then.

I think it's time they got a few more 'experts' in to run the Fund -they obviously have no idea. I'm sure Carter Ruck have a few good accountant pals ready to earn a few easy bucks!

Take care Claudia.

Cláudia said...

Hello, Nancy.
Thank you. Hope so too.
Here in Portugal I thin the total of fatal cases from swine flu is 17. If I was offered a vaccine (which I won't be) I would happily take it.
I usually tease my mum saying that any virus entering her system is immediately killed. :-)
Bet those experts would take the chance and waste a little more assuming there is still something to waste.
Take care yourself, Nancy.

Hi Claudia & all!!
I wish your uncle and will be as well as possible in the circumstances; also the best for you and your family.
I noticed, as many of us, the competence of this odd couple to choose the best to defend themselves and the worse to find their daughter. It obviously is not for chance... It is why i don't believe the mccanns are happy with this conman being arrested, on the opposite i think they are VERY upset with it. Imagine this man start to "sing" how interesting will be the lyrics XD. Don't forget this man made a bigger cannery than what he did at mccanns. He used money given from Trafigura to save executives who are in jail in Ivory Cost.
If I were the maccn(salvo seja ) i will be very very upset.

Cláudia said...

Hi, Mandarinn.
Thank you for your kind words.
You're absolutely right. They find the best to defend themselves and a bunch of incompetent, dishonest people to look for their missing daughter.
I would be upset too, Mandarinn. let's hope Halligen feels in the mood to sing a nice tune. :-)

nancy said...

Docmac -

How great to read you. Can't wait for you to come back on with your uplifting posts! You've been missed!

nancy said...

Hi Claudia -

Joana is reporting that the McCanns will go back to Portugal to attend GA's trial. Let's hope their PR Company has done about as good a job as their pretend detectives so they will get a reception outside the Court not really to their liking! A few rockets that the Portuguese and Spanish are very fond of would do the trick!

If this couple had expended as much energy in looking after poor Maddie as they have in gunning for Goncalo, they would not have lost her in the first place!

Hi Mandarin -

Nice to read you. I think the McCanns will be very happy once this nasty little man is silenced once and for all, be it in the UK or in the States, not forgetting he is the type who can be bought for a nice tidy sum in his bank!

Cláudia said...

Hi, Nancy.
I'll have to see it to believe it. But if they come, I hope they are brave enough to announce it publicly before hand and don't hide as they usually do. After all, he who has nothing to hide, has nothing to fear. If they do that, then we'll be able to see if the money they spent on PR has been well spent! ;-)

nancy said...

Hi Claudia -

According to McCann Files CM has said the McCanns will attend the trial on the 1st day! It will be interesting to see if they do go or whether they get cold feet and decide not to. I expect they are looking forward to a bit more publicity. It's at least three weeks since we saw them on television!

So CM is still their mouthpiece. They are always crying out for money for their Fund and yet are still paying this PR man! How dishonest is that!

Cláudia said...

Hi, Nancy.
I believe they will unless they are told it may not be good for them. Anyway, remember Christmas is coming and people feel more generous and tend to donate a bit more...
I'm sure that CM, who Gerry said has become a good friend of the family, wouldn't charge a penny for helping them. ;-)

Hi everyone -

Good to see you all. Docmac, I look forward to your first post and opinion after so long away from our screens! Rosiepops will be delighted to see you again!

Meanwhile, I think we should all let Goncalo Amaral know that we are backing him all the way in his Court case with the McCanns.

It seems they have decided to rouse themselves to attend the first day of the trial. Maybe they will also rouse themselves to look around that radius in PdeLuz which their clever dick tec said she could be held.

I wouldn't bet on it though!

Cláudia said...

Hi, Nancy!
You expect them to look around for free? ;-) Maybe when the weather is better and someone offers accommodation, meals, drinks and a pool.
