Outrage over internet great wall of China
JACQUELIN MAGNAY IN BEIJING
31/07/2008 12:02:06 AM

CHINA'S vow to open up its country to the world through the Olympic Games was in tatters last night as an International Olympic Committee member, Kevan Gosper of Australia, apologised to the global press for misleading them about access to the internet.

China's Communist Party regime has put in place a reinvigorated internet censorship program blocking controversial websites for journalists at the Beijing Olympic Games while demanding that hotels implement an intrusive spyware program to monitor guests' internet use.

The double whammy of increased censorship coupled with the hotel spying flies in the face of promises for complete media freedom made by the Chinese authorities when they won the right to host the Olympic Games in 2001. It was a pledge repeated as late as April this year.

Mr Gosper, who is chairman of the press commission and deputy chairman of the IOC Beijing co-ordination commission, revealed that "some IOC officials had negotiated with the Chinese to have some sensitive sites blocked". But he said he was unaware of the deal and had inadvertently misled the world's media for months about the extent to which they would have unfettered freedom of reporting.

After late night meetings with Beijing Olympic Games organisers, Mr Gosper said he could not "tell China what to do".

Earlier he told the South China Morning Post : "I am disappointed, but we are dealing with a communist country that has censorship, and you will see what they say you can see."

Mr Gosper acknowledged that many previous statements about unfettered access and freedom of reporting had been wrong.

An IOC press commission member, Paul Radford, of Reuters, said it had been made abundantly clear at many meetings with Beijing organisers that journalists would have unrestricted access to report freely at the Games. "Journalists have a right to be angry. It will adversely impact on the way they can cover the Games," Mr Radford said.

The toughening of the censorship is being laid at the feet of the Communist Party, Beijing Olympic insiders say. A new level of political influence in the organising committee in the past six weeks means that some of the promises made to the IOC will not be kept.

A Beijing Organising Committee spokesman, Sun Weide, said yesterday certain internet sites would be unavailable to foreign journalists. Mr Sun didn't specify which sites, but when asked about the Falun Gong, he said any sites associated with that movement were blocked.

"Our promise was that journalists would be able to use the internet for their work during the Olympic Games," Mr Sun said. "So we have given them sufficient access to do that."

Mr Gosper said the IOC was taking a "good hard look at what Sun Weide said and the implications of that".

Another Australian IOC member, John Coates, said he was shocked that China would implement such censorship. "It is important to have freedom of the press and full transparency during the Games … but what the IOC can do about it, I don't know."

Yesterday the Herald was unable to access sensitive sites relating to human rights, Tibet and the Falun Gong spiritual movement. Other sites such as The New York Times , the BBC, Radio Free Asia and Taiwanese newspapers were unavailable.

Repeated searches for controversial topics on Google were also blocked.

This week journalists in Beijing were frustrated in their attempts to access the latest report issued by Amnesty International. Attempts to access information about tougher security measures in Tibet, were also unsuccessful.

A United States senator, Sam Brownback, revealed yesterday that international hotels had contacted him, concerned about being forced to install the spy system. He said the demands on the hotels to install the computer hardware and software meant journalists, athletes' families and visitors are subject "to invasive gathering by the Chinese Public Security Bureau".

"The Chinese Government has put in place a system to spy on and gather information about every guest at hotels," Senator Brownback said.

Complaints by the international media about the frustrating slowness of the internet at the Olympic Games main press centre have been interpreted by some that transmissions have been slowed by intense filtering of the world news agencies' copy flow.

Chinese officials said Games organisers had to work within the laws of China and any websites involving pornography, violence or matters of state security had been blocked.

The officials said this situation had been explained previously and that foreign media should be appreciative of the progressive steps taken to free up as many web sites as possible.

I don't know why but it sounds somewhat familiar and it does ring some bells. Do you think in China it will be possible to read and discuss THE BOOK? ;-)

Claudia,

Thanks for the link to The Herald. What I find shocking, imo, regarding that article is, that woman gets paid for writing that tripe!

I read last nights posts on the other thread. Joe, I mentioned on the DE the exact same comment you have made. How would they prove who wrote the posts. We live in an age where computers are hacked all the time. We have a PC and several laptops being used where I post from. I could use any of the laptops here when the PC is not on (that is where the thingy that allows all the laptops access to the Internet is attached) and still get access to the Internet. I could park my car outside someones house or just sit out side in my garden and still get access to the Interenet via some other persons Internet access if they have it on and do not have any security to stop other people using it. I believe this is not against the Law unless there is security to access and some one hacks it. I am in no way computer literate and I know that. When I log on to this blog I click on watch in real time, it is not the location I am from that I see and not the location of my IP address either.

My defence will be:

When I go out I always leave my doors unlocked and sometimes the windows are also left open. I enjoy wining and dining with my friends in another friends back garden approx 100 mts from my house, in fact it is just like sitting in my own back garden I can see the top of the roof of my house from my friend Stu Pidder's garden therefore I believe it is within the bounds of responsible home safety especially as we take it in turn to check on each others homes every 30 mins or so.
I am sure my Insurance Company would have no quibble with that when I need to make a claim if it were ever burgled. Every home owner does it! Although the chances of it being burgled in such circumstances are very rare hence the no need to lock up, imo.

Although there was one incident regarding a laptop in my home, I had gone to do my usual check and discovered my laptop had been moved, used and then replaced. I just knew as soon I entered the house that someone had been using it, the study door was half open, not the way I had left it, the small window to the rear was open, it was closed when I left. I looked at the desk and I could tell from the way the the mouse was sitting on the mat that it had been taken at some point in the evening and then replaced. I went back to Stu Pidder's and finished my wine and Tapas although this did kinda bother me I decided not to let it interfere with my dinner and my social life, my friends are important to me and it was the kind of night we were all into each other so why spoil it.

However with the art of hindsight I think this has been happening over a long period of time, maybe 14-16 months. I decided to mention it to my mates cos it was starting to annoy me that someone could just go into my unlocked home and use my laptop, I mean you do not expect that where we live it is very safe, very quiet and I really did not think for a minute something like that would happen, if I did think that I would never have left the doors unlocked.

Anyway, I was telling my friends my sad news when my closest mate in the whole world, Dolly Dimple said that when she was checking her home (a few months ago, FFS some friend!) she saw a guy walking past my house. She knew he was a local, he had bright orange hair, he was peally whally white, wore a kilt, sipped Whisky from a small flask, was humming 'Donald where's your troosers' and carried bag pipes under his right arm. She thought he was a bit odd because he had something under his left arm wrapped in a blanket with a mouse hanging out, she watched him walk up the street and he hid in a neighbours front garden. She said she walked up and peeped over the hedge to see what he was doing. He was sitting with what she now knows was my laptop, it had my name on it 'Amya Moron' but at the time she just thought someone shared the same name as me. She said he was sitting in the neighbours garden, she could see him clearly as the Streetlamp gave her a clear view, he was laughing like a hyena she could only see some of the words on the screen...3.. and... A...and...rows of pictures, then he was typing a word...Zodi....that was all she could see.
She said she would definately be able to recognize him again as he has a distinctive walk, it looks like he is doing the highland fling, she would recognize him any where despite not being able to see his face.

My witnesses for all the occassions that my laptop was used without my permission are:

Stu Pidder and his partner Ida Nyit.
Patty O'Furniture and her partner Pop Sickle.
Xavier Breath and his partner Sue Cherself.
Dolly Dimple and her partner Hyman Idiot.
And of course not forgetting my PR rep should I need one Boabie Puller.

Kate tried everything to accuse Robert Murat- Correio da Manhã

Kate’s notebooks – McCanns and friends against Anglo-Portuguese

Madeleine McCann’s mother engaged in collecting indicia that would lead to the accusation of the Anglo-Portuguese [man] over the little girl’s disappearance

Kate McCann bet everything into blaming Robert Murat over the disappearance of her daughter, and it was with that purpose in mind and with the help of friends that she engaged in collecting evidence and in convincing the Polícia Judiciária of the Anglo-Portuguese [man’s] involvement.

On the day that Murat is made an arguido, already after friends of the McCanns referred his presence in the surroundings of the apartment on the evening of the disappearance of Madeleine to the authorities, Kate registered in her notes that she had become “very hopeful, excited about this”.

Three weeks later, Kate, who met frequently with the PJ during the investigation, writes that “Robert Murat continues to be the main suspect”. “For good reason”, she adds, lamenting that there is not “strong evidence”.

When three of the friends are called to the PJ to repeat their statements following contradictions about the presence of Murat at the Ocean Club, on the 11th of July, Kate tries to excuse her friends with the fact that they were questioned in the presence of the Abglo-Portuguese [man]: “What happened was that they were questioned in the room, sitting beside Murat and his lawyer. He apparently said that they were lying, which made them quite angry. They started thinking that he was certainly involved. What his he hiding???”

In her notes dated July 18, almost two months after Maddie’s disappearance and at a time when there are starting to appear indicia against the McCanns, Kate sounds disheartened and reinforces the accusations against Murat: “I had lots of hope that there would be progress in Murat’s situation. I’m sure that he is involved and I feel like killing him, but I can’t”. Nine days later, Madeleine’s mother receives a message from a woman that tells her that Murat tried to photograph the granddaughter of a friend, also three years old and blond, and Kate sends “the whole” information to the PJ. “I’m certain that he is guilty and I just want to scream”, she writes on the 27th of July.

Premonition with Malinka

Sergey Malinka, aged 23, had been living in Praia da Luz for eight years. He was a friend of Robert Murat – one of the first suspects of the disappearance of Madeleine – and he ended up becoming involved in the turmoil of suspects because he was the last person to contact the Anglo-Portuguese [man] after the child disappeared. He was also close to Murat because he set up the online page for Romigen – the company that belonged to the Anglo-Portuguese and to Michaela Walczuch.

Although Malinka was only heard as a witness, he ended up becoming involved in the abduction. The questioning was hard and outside the PJ, the agents’ irritation could be heard because the questions remained unanswered. His phone was tapped, just like Murat’s, but nothing relevant was detected.

In her notes, Kate refers to Malinka as one of the persons involved in the little girl’s abduction. The first indication is dated June 5 and also concerns Murat. “Robert Murat continues to be the main suspect and for good reason, but unfortunately there isn’t strong evidence. Malinka and Michaela are also very much in the scene. I always had a bad premonition, uncomfortable, about Malinka. He is cold”, wrote Kate, who later on supplied information to Método 3, a Spanish detective agency, telling them that a witness had seen Michaela transporting a child.

It is recalled that Malinka, of Russian nationality, was heard by the PJ on the 16th of May, two days after Murat was made an arguido and the PJ searched his house.

The Russian was damaged because there were equally suspicions in his past. Malinka reportedly engaged in sexual relationships with minors, which turned him into a potential predator. The fact that he is a computer expert led the Polícia Judiciária to admit that he might have abducted Maddie.

Jane Tanner guaranteed that Murat carried Maddie

Jane Tanner, one of the Englishwomen that accompanied the McCanns on their holidays in Praia da Luz, guaranteed after the first few hours upon the disappearance that she saw a man carrying a child walking towards Casa Liliana (where Murat lived). Later on – and also facing the suspicions that befell the Anglo-Portuguese [man] - Jane said she was almost certain that the man she had visualized for a few seconds only was in fact Robert Murat.

The witness’ statement was considered to be credible during the first hours and strengthened the suspicions that befell the Anglo-Portuguese [man]. Robert Murat ended up being the target of a search on the 14th of May and was heard at the PJ on that same morning, denying any involvement in the child’s disappearance. The lack of indicia ended up determining his release.

Suspicions

Profile accused him – The English experts that elaborated the profile of the abductor guaranteed that in Murat’s case it fitted to 90 percent.

Accusations from friends - A former friend of Murat gave the PJ a deposition telling that the Anglo-Portuguese [man] had strange behaviours when he was a child. It was one more fact against him.

Touched documents – Called during the initial phase of the process to work as a translator, Murat was caught by the PJ touching the inquiry’s documents.

I'm sorry, Kate. Forgive us all.

Policeman irritates Kate for not offering coffee - Correio da Manhã

Kate’s notebooks – Madeleine’s mother did not like to be questioned

Reports of the first day without Maddie tell of discomfort when faced with the investigators who searched for her daughter

Kate McCann did not like the Polícia Judiciária. On the first day without Maddie, a few hours after she had seen her daughter for the last time, in the apartment that they all occupied in Praia da Luz, the child’s mother didn’t hide the discomfort in face of the investigators.

In her writings, which were apprehended months later by the same PJ, Kate complained about the treatment that she had been given during her first questioning: “Nobody offered us a drink or food. All the policemen were informally dressed and smoking. No sympathy was shown. […] The police officer who drove us to the PJ was asking me questions and then he typed them down. Slow”, says Kate, who also didn’t like the fact that she had to return to the Judiciária a short while later.

“We got a phone call from the PJ saying that we had to return. We turned around and returned at 200 kilometres per hour. Scary once again”, Kate continues, sparing the rest of the police forces no criticism. “The GNR appeared without being certain of their role – they seemed to be doing nothing”, she underlined.

Kate equally didn’t like to speak to Yvone, the English social security employee who worked at the department of child protection and who later told the Leicester police that she had found the behaviour of the parents and of one of the friends to be strange. “Also Yvone. A bit boring, worrying, because I didn’t know who it was”, Kate reported.

In the same writings, and still remembering the 4th of May (the notes started to be written at a later date, allegedly upon medical advice), Kate McCann recollects that the British ambassador offered her help. And that there were also technicians from the consulate on location, and Madeleine’s mother remembered a conversation with Robert Murat, during which he told her about his daughter and her similarities with Maddie.

British woman wanted to help the couple

Yvone was on holidays in the Algarve when she heard that Maddie had disappeared. The technician, who is an expert in cases of endangered children, rushed to offer her help, but later guaranteed to the police that she had not been well accepted. Yvone also said that David Payne, one of the friends, had advised the McCanns not to speak to her. She found the parents’ behaviour strange.

Kate admits her daughter’s death

Despite having only admitted it publicly in August, Kate assumed the possibility that her daughter was dead on the day after the disappearance. “Is she dead?” she questions herself in her notebooks, in a register of the 4th of May, after she was heard at the PJ in Portimão. The hypothesis that her daughter’s disappearance is connected with paedophilia also haunted her: “Thinking about paedophiles makes me want to pull the skin off.”

Police in force in the Algarve

During the first days after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the Polícia Judiciária only admitted the theory of abduction of the little girl in public, and mobilized extraordinary means into the Algarve. The directory of Faro, which is directed by Guilhermino Encarnação, was joined by brigades from Lisbon and elements of the Central Directory of Banditism Combat (DCCB), including its director, Luís Neves.

With the investigations centered on the abduction theory and with extraordinary means mobilized, alerts were sent to the borders, to the airports and to the Spanish authorities.

The PJ even asked for the population’s cooperation to find Maddie, and one day later, Guilhermino Encarnação guaranteed that he already had a photofit of the child’s [abductor], which would not be publicized.

Praia da Luz and its surroundings were patrolled by GNR men, car stop operations were set up on the roads that exit the Algarve, and the garbage collection was also followed.

A total of approximately one hundred men from the Polícia Judiciária were moved into the Algarve as early as in the first few hours after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, which happened on the evening of the 3rd of May.

So, according to today's article in Correio da Manhã:

- Kate did not like Portuguese Polícia Judiciária: well, Kate, this may come as a shock to you but guess what, it seems at least 10 million Portuguese people aren't exactly in love with you either.

- Kate was annoyed that during questioning no food or drink was offered. Well, Kate, don't you think that you got yourselves in enough trouble because of food and drink? Let's not forget that it was because of some food and drinks that you and your husband decided to leave your 3 under four year old children, alone in an holiday apartment in a foreign country.

- Kate was annoyed because they had to turn around and go back to Policía Judiciária at high speed. Well, Kate, I, a Portuguese citizen, ask you for forgiveness. I'm sorry our Polícia Judiciária was in a hurry to find your missing daughter, once again, the missing daughter who was left by you and your husbad to babysit your 2 year old twins. From the bottom of my heart, forgive us all for the hurry.

- The GNR appeared without being certain of their role. You mean, Kate, like you and your husband who definately aren't certain of your roles as mother and father?

- Yvonne, I'm waiting for you to ask for forgiveness to Kate for annoying her with that irritating habit of yours to try and help people in need. Shame on you, woman.

- I'm glad the Ambassador found the time to stop by, offer you help and support and in a way protect you from all those incompetent, stupid Portuguese people whose mission was to find your daughter and, of course, annoy you.

- You know, Kate, the idea of your daughter being taken by paedophiles makes me want to pull my skin off too. That is why I never understood why you and your husband always stated so categorically that Madeleine will be found alive and unharmed.

- Kate, has it crossed your mind to thank the hundreds if not thousands of people who looked for your daughter, including the PJ police officers who cancelled their holidays to find Madeleine, who risked their lives driving at a high speed because they wanted to find your daughter and who were portrayed in a disgusting manner in your more than biased press? I didn't think so.

My tribute to a wonderful, inspiring man: Dr Randy Pausch

Randy Pausch, author of The Last Lecture, dies

Randy Pausch, shown in September 2007, gave a lecture about facing terminal cancer that became an internet sensation and a bestselling book. He died Friday.

Randy Pausch, the computer science professor who rose to fame after giving a quirky last lecture about celebrating life in the face of his terminal cancer, died Friday.

The 47-year-old died at his home in Chesapeake, Va., according to Wall Street Journal columnist Jeffrey Zaslow, who helped launch Pausch to fame after writing about the speech — which also garnered widespread attention when it was posted on video sharing site YouTube.

When Pausch was offered a deal to write a book expanding on his lecture, Zaslow co-authored the non-fiction title. The Last Lecture became a bestseller.

"It was the most fun 53 days of my life because it was like a performance," Zaslow said. "It was like getting 53 extra lectures."

A pioneer in the field of virtual reality who became a professor at his alma mater, Carnegie Mellon University, Pausch also co-founded the school's Entertainment Technology Center and developed programs to make teaching computer science and animation more fun for high school and post-secondary students.

He also helped develop the Alice 3D-animation software and had stints at Walt Disney and Electronic Arts.

He was diagnosed with incurable pancreatic cancer in September 2006.
A year later, Pausch took part in a lecture series at the university that saw professors give hypothetical final talks and speak about what mattered most to them.

The popular and flamboyant Pausch drew a packed crowd for his light-hearted session, dedicated to his children.
He joked about his realized and unrealized childhood dreams and urged people to have more fun and live life to the fullest.

Aside from the book deal and internet interest, he was invited to visit The Oprah Winfrey Show and make other TV appearances. He also maintained a blog that delivered updates on his life.
Pausch is survived by his wife, three children, his mother and his sister

Political pressure: spin that!

Kate McCann Forced Political Pressure on the Investigation

Revelations –Maddie’s mother’s notes prove Gonçalo Amaral right

Kate McCann forces political pressure

The English prime minister called the couple directly and the British diplomacy took care of the travelling

“To increase the political pressure”. The phrase, by Kate McCann, written among the notes that were found in her house and which the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) had apprehended, is clear about the manner in which Maddie’s parents intended to manage their daughter’s disappearance, bringing it into the press’ first pages and turning it into a case with political outlines.

On the morning of the 23rd of May 2007 (twenty days after Maddie’s disappearance), before they left for the Sanctuary of Fátima, Kate and Gerry left Gordon Brown a message. Maddie’s mother describes it as a form of “raising the political pressure” and reveals that the present prime-minister – at that date, he was not in functions but had already been confirmed as Tony Blair’s successor – answered her only three hours later. He spoke with Gerry, was “very sympathetic and gave strength”, tells Kate, who describes the visit to the catholic sanctuary as overwhelming, potent and emotional.

On the same day in the afternoon, Gordon Brown called Maddie’s parents again. Kate’s notebooks do not report the conversation but one is able to understand that the purpose was to create political pressure, forcing the PJ to act swiftly.

Today, at more than a year’s distance from the child’s disappearance and after the case has been archived, Kate’s notes expose the pressures that were reported by the former coordinator of the case, Gonçalo Amaral, who from the moment when he was removed from the investigation, realized that the process would not produce an accusation.

With an investigation that was initially inclined towards the abduction theory, partly forced by the McCanns, the evidence of the pressures by the couple also explains the British press’ posture in the coverage of the case, mainly from the moment when Madeleine’s parents went from victims to suspects and arguidos. With the British prime minister himself supporting the McCanns, through direct and frequent phone calls that are revealed by Kate, it became almost impossible for the English government to help an investigation that had indicated the parents as guilty.

Apart from the contacts with Gordon Brown, Kate’s notebooks reveal other important allies. From the hiring of Clarence Mitchell, who at that point in time worked for the government, as an assistant, until the conversations with the wife of Tony Blair, the former British prime minister.

Mitchell actually had a pivotal role in the propaganda machine that was built by the McCanns within a few days, and which counted on the great help from the British diplomacy in all the trips that were carried out by Kate and Gerry.

The first and most media-exposed [trip] – to Rome, to be received by Pope Benedict XVI – was suggested by the assistant, on the 27th of May, after speaking to Francis Campbell, the British ambassador at the Vatican. “Rome is already preparing itself”, Kate wrote, anticipating that visit as what would become the “main” news on that day. One day later, the visit and the audience with the Pope were already confirmed, with a program that was prepared in a detailed manner.

On the 30th of May, after leaving the British consulate in Rome, Kate and Gerry, accompanied by the ambassador, made a strategic stop “for the photographers to catch an image looking at the Basilica”, and continued towards the Vatican, where they spent a few minutes with Benedict XVI. A moment that was described as very emotional, positive and important, and that summoned “loads of” journalists and photographers, which is definitely a concern that is always present with the couple.

After Rome, Madrid, Berlin and Morocco followed, trips with the purpose of publicizing Madeleine’s face and which always relied on passages through consulates or receptions by British ambassadors and political representatives of the corresponding countries.

According to Kate’s notes, the days started or ended with meetings, phone calls and emails. Cherie Blair, the wife of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown’s predecessor, was one of Kate’s contacts, as demonstrated by the reports of the 17th of July. Before Kate gives Sky News an interview, she speaks with Cherie, who agrees to make a 20 second videoclip about Maddie for the English channel. On that same day, Blair himself pledges assistance and makes himself available for whatever is needed.

Kate’s notes:

Left a message for Gordon Brown to call us in order to increase the political pressure” – Kate McCann, 23rd of May

“Gordon Brown called and spoke with Gerry – very sympathetic and gave strength. Somewhat emotive feeling afterwards” – Kate McCann, 23rd of May

“Clarence spoke to us about a possible visit to the Vatican. Rome is already preparing itself. Francis Campbell was spoken to” – Kate McCann, 27th of May

The ambassador’s solidarity

On the 4th [of May], only hours after the alert of Madeleine’s disappearance was given, Kate wrote in her notes that the English ambassador, John Buck, had been in the apartment offering them his solidarity. She also noted the presence of two employees from the consulate and stressed the strong presence of the media on location. “There is news appearing in the United Kingdom”, Maddie’s mother remembered, also noting the “worrying” and “boring” presence of Yvone, the English social security technician who tried to understand whether there was anything in the family’s life that might explain the child’s absence.

It should be referred that on that very same day, the ambassador met with senior officials from the PJ to understand the outlines of the case.

The news

Abduction theory – On the first days after Maddie’s disappearance, on the 3rd of May 2007, the abduction theory was the only one that was mentioned in the news. “Give back our Madeleine”, the parents appealed, not admitting any other possibility.

Visit to Fátima – Twenty days after Maddie’s disappearance, the McCann couple went to pray at the Sanctuary of Fátima. But before that, they called Gordon Brown in order to increase the political pressure.

Brown’s pressure – Only five days after the McCanns’ contact with the British prime minister, Gordon Brown’s pressures on Portugal because of the Maddie case were already known.

McCanns at the Vatican - The trip to the Vatican and the audience with Pope Benedict XVI were suggested by advisor Clarence Mitchell, who mobilized the British diplomacy in order to take the McCanns to Rome.

“Former PJ director pulls the rug from under his successor’s feet”

The former President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio, said to SIC yesterday that it is truly unheard of, from the point of view of institutions and of the prestige that we must defend before foreign countries, that the former director of the PJ, a joint prosecutor [Alípio Ribeiro], came out to criticize the archiving [of the process of the disappearance of Maddie] when it was him who managed that process, and I also presume that the constitution of arguidos [of Kate and Gerry McCann] was not entirely unknown to him. I think this is an amazing thing in terms of pulling the rug from under the feet of colleagues that succeeded him in his post. There is no democracy that justifies this”, according to Sampaio.

Concerning Gonçalo Amaral, the former President considers that “if he has factual data that is important for the reopening of this instruction, then he should present them”.

Book Complaint advances – The McCanns say that a lawsuit for defamation against Gonçalo Amaral is “likely”, because of the book, but also against Portuguese newspapers for reproducing its contents.

Amaral Everything in the process – The McCanns’ spokesman says that “from the Attorney General’s statements, they are innocent before the law”, but Amaral recalls that his statements are in the process.

Portimão Presentation – Gonçalo Amaral launches his book in Portimão today. The session is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Municipal Museum. Porto and Braga are his next destinations.

Book Reserve your copy – “The Truth of the Lie”, Gonçalo Amaral’s book, will be distributed again next week, on a date that is yet to be scheduled by CM. Reserve a copy at your kiosk.

Malinka Receives 250 thousand euros – Apart from Robert Murat, also the Russian Sergey Malinka and his [Murat's] girlfriend at that time, Michaela Walczuch, will receive approximately 250 thousand euros in compensations from the British press.

Clarence Mitchell: The Drama Shark

Clarence Mitchell by Eduardo Dâmaso, Deputy Chief Editor of Correio da Manhã

The McCann Family Spokesman is a shark used to the meanders of the English Politics. He knows how to use the words and chooses the moments for drama - like that hilarious moment where he allowed himself to be filmed in a supposed phone call with the couple* - and others, when the communication is serious.

Yesterday, between the drama and the seriousness he threatened the newspapers who reproduce the Book by Gonçalo Amaral with processes for slander. 'Either they are very brave or completely stupid' said Mitchell. It's not one thing or the other. In Portugal - we believe ... that we still have the freedom of expression, and, without offending anyone, we still can write and say different things from what is told by the McCanns or by Mr. Mitchell. We can still write about the doubts that an investigation raises. We can still say, I believe, that an archiving is a long way of being considered a declaration of innocence. Mr. Mitchell would like to create a 'wall of silence' over this issue but honestly that will be impossible for him to achieve. Mr. Mitchell is in fact someone who owes something to the silence. At least, that is what his status of witness, advises to - but, in that matter, the Portuguese authorities are much more generous, mainly when they are british subjects.

1 - Why all this need for POLITICAL pressure from so very early on? I can even understand (wether I agree or not) the wish to raise public awareness. But what the hell have politics got to do with his? If this was an abduction, like Kate and Gerry McCanns want us all to believe, where do politics fit in? Was Madeleine abducted by FARC?

2 - Do all British citizens abroad have immediate phone contact with the Prime Minister? Do diplomatic channels work like this with all British citizens abroad? Does the Ambassador personally visit all British citizens abroad in need? Do all British citizens abroad have the support of a former prime Minister and his wife as well as a spokesperson who used to work for the Government?

3 - As for Mr Eduardo Dâmaso's comments, is he the only one who tries to explain to Mr Mitchell that in Portugal we live in a democracy, we have freedom of expression and that we don't need him to tell us what to think, what to say, what to read and what to discuss? Isn't it time that our spineless politicians get a backbone and take a stand? Don't wait for the Portuguese people to do it. Because if that happens, you'll regret it. The Portuguese are getting fed up and enough is enough. I hope someone from the government is reading the common citizen's comments in our online newspapers and magazines. They are very revealing, in my opinion.

UPDATED - Intimidation tactics, the truth, the lies and all in between

McCanns to sue cop over book

By VERONICA LORRAINE

Published: Today

DEVASTATED Kate and Gerry McCann are to launch a legal blitz in Portugal after the publication of a scandalous book about the disappearance of their daughter Maddie.

In The Truth Behind The Lie, ex-police chief Goncalo Amaral details ludicrous allegations about the couple and the pals they dined with when Maddie vanished in Portugal last year.

The McCanns plan to take action against Amaral, Portuguese newspapers which reprinted parts of the £10 book and bloggers who discussed it.

A source close to the family said last night: “The gloves are off. Amaral has over-stepped the mark and they feel they have been left with no choice. Enough is enough.
“The lawyers are looking at pretty much everything.”

In the book, Amaral, 48, claims that cops suspected Kate and Gerry almost as soon as Maddie, now five, vanished in the Algarve.

He also makes a serious allegation against one of their “Tapas 7” dining pals.
Earlier this week, Kate and Gerry, both 40 of Rothley, Leics, were officially cleared of any involvement in the case.

Amaral, who was taken off the investigation last October, said last night: “This book is not revenge, it is not persecution. We can discuss the case in court if they want.”

And then the Portuguese version of the thing, which they think won't get to the UK

Maddie: McCann give as' probable 'case to Amaral

The lawyers for the parents of Madeleine McCann are reviewing the book by former inspector of Judicial Gonçalo Amaral on the case and may include a 'probable' case on the defamation Portuguese newspapers that reproduce its content.

"The lawyers are examining the book, but will only act when ready ', the agency Lusa said today the spokesman of the parents of Madeleine, Clarence Mitchell.

Although the decision to proceed with the process has not yet been taken, Mitchell estimates that "probably there will be a process" in the Portuguese courts.

At issue is the book "Maddie - the truth of lies", published in Portugal on Thursday, in which the former head of Judicial Police maintains its argument to explain the disappearance of Madeleine since May 03, 2007, a hotel complex in Praia da Luz (Algarve), where he spent holidays with his parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, and the twin brothers.

In the book, Gonçalo Amaral, who is now retired from the PJ, argues that the child, then with three years, died in the apartment where the family was installed and launches a suspicion that parents will have participated in the concealment of the body.

Now, which is it?

Are we all going to be sued? Gonçalo Amaral, , the newspapers which published passages, all who bought his book, all who read it, all who had the audacity to read it and discuss it (those nasty bastards!), all who dreamed about it, all who hid under the bed just to take a little peek and look at the pretty pictures?

I tell you what, Mr Mitchell, what about telling the legal team, namely Mr Rogério Alves and Mr Pinto de Abreu to launch a huge worldwide legal action? You could then sue millions of Portuguese people, millions of British people and millions of other people around the world who listen to you and find you pathetic and dare to dislike or question your saint employers. I can already picture it in my mind. The trial could be held in the Sahara desert, because I think that would be big enough to take us all in.

But wait:

Maybe that won't be necessary because the legal action is only 'probable'. Maybe you will sue. Maybe not. And maybe, in your infinite generosity, you'll forgive us all, millions of thinking people, and spare us the jail time.

Post Scriptum: Because I'm a generous sould, I'll help you with another name, of another thinking being, that you may consider sueing too. His name is Mr Hernâni Carvalho, he is a journalist and works in TVI channel. He said on live TV that regarding Portuguese law, you're as stupid as an army boot. Please, go easy on him. Remember than Portugal was one the first countries in the world to abolish the death sentence.

Update on the intimidation tactics from McCann defenders:

"Does Anyone Know

by Rosiepops Today at 3:10 pm

If a Portuguese poster translates this publication of the fat pig's (Amaral's) into English and copies it to their blog site *knowing* it is going to be read by Brits in the UK, can they be sued?

They must know of course, because why else would they translate it into English?Especially, as it is becoming clear that the McCann's are now going to go for Bloggers as well as the Portuguese press like the cess pit CdM.

I would say that some people need to start feeling afraid, very, very afraid! I fully expect the sh*t for brains Claudia to translate it, in view of the above news if the stupid cow had any sense she wouldn't, but as we know she hasn't any sense, she of course will.

However, I will not be reading it, I have not been anywhere near that ridiculous blog of hers since I left her a message some time ago and I do not intend starting now, that is one person who is fast going the way of Mrs Consecutive Numbers and what is more is being encouraged by the Gallstone. I just wonder how many more are going to have mental breakdowns before they actually realise that this hate blogging is having a detrimental affect on them, I hear there is another just about to tip over into the realms of mental instability."

Rosie, will you be picking me up to drive me to the court yourself? :-)

Updated Ouch...

Update: I have the book in my hand an I'll start reading it soon. I also bought today's edition of Correio da Manhã. There's an interview with Gonçalo Amaral. There he says that he believes the body was frozen or kept in the cold. And an interesting detail: Gerry and Kate's mobile phones were checked early on (on the 4th, I believe) and apparently there were no calls in the record, except for a call from Gerry on Kate's phone, on May the 3rd around 11 pm. Interestingly, that call was not recorded in Gerry's phone. The police officers with the PJ thought it was suspicious that parents of a child who went missing hours before had the time and the peace of mind to delete phone records at such a time.

1 - Gonçalo Amaral starts by thanking family and friends, anonymous citizens who supported him and also cibernauts and bloggers who 'defended the cause of truth and justice'.

2 - Very strange Mr Alípio Ribeiro's remark that making the McCanns arguidos was a hasty decision because he knew it all along and agreed with the decision at the time (I always thought that was ridiculous because there was no way such a decision in such a worldwide known case would habe been made without the agreement of the National Director of the PJ).

3 - The British Police agreed with the PJ that Madeleine had died in apartment 5A and that there was a body that needed to be found. Later things seemed to have changed.

4 - Making them arguidos was inevitable due to the non-incrimination principle. Certain questions culd not be asked if they weren't arguidos. Even for their own protection.

5 - Unsual, priviledged treatment of the couple is stressed.

6 - The British Police was working very closely with the PJ. They were in a room just next to the 'crisis room' the PJ worked in and were aware of everything that was going on.

7 - The McCann's routine is described. Madeleine, Sean and Madeleine spend most of the time in the créche.

8 - Sorry, let me just insert here something that hasn't got anything to do with Mr Amaral's book: Hello, visitor from Leicester. Stick around if you wish to be updated on 'The truth of the Lie'.

9 - On the 1st of May Madeleine cries for an hour and 15 minutes, between 10h30 and 11h45 pm and cries for daddy. She only stops crying when her parents get back home.

10 - The next morning Madeleine questions her parents about not being there while she cried all that time. (My comment: doesn't seem to have worked, does it?).

11 - When the first police officers arrived at the scene several people were inside the apartment. Gonçalo Amaral says that mistakes were made because the scene should have been recorded (pictures or footage) with the people who were there so important aspects like the way those people were dressed was recorded. The twins were sleeping and did not wake up with all the comotion. And the bed sheets in the twins' cots was not there. First 72 hours are extremely important in these cases.

12 - Contradiction regarding the checking times. Some say every 30 minutes, other say every 15 minutes. Gonçalo Amaral calls Glen Power for info on the whole group. They history could be essential for the case.

13 - Inspector Chief Tavares de Almeida forgets his holiday because of the case. All Portuguese forces were now aware of the crime as well as Interpol. Searches start. The apartment had been contaminated by friends of the couple, employees from the resort, GNR officers and their dogs and other unknown people. Was the contamination out of ignorance or was it on purpose?

14 - Early in the morning the searches continue, a crime scene team from Lisbon is on the way and the PJ starts to formally interview hundreds of people. The PJ asks British police for help regarding any British turist present in the Algarve who may have a criminal record. Footage from hotels, banks, supermarkets, gas stations and highways are checked. Spain is alerted to pay attention to departures to Morocco. The harbours of Tarifa and Algeciras are checked through cctv footage. Marinas in the Algarve are checked as weel as their records of departures and arrivals.

15 - The PJ checks all photos and footage from the Tapas 9. Clues could be found there, according to Mr Amaral. However, there are no photos or footage at night which might have been useful to help understand what happened that evening. Sexual offenders are checked to make sure they weren't around PDL at the time and the criminal history of PDL is also investigated. No signs of break in, unlike the McCanns and Sky news reported. The PM, Public Ministry is informed of the situation. In the document the case is treated like a "Kidnapping?". Mr Amaral said the document is in the files and that as early as the 4th of May there were questions, which explains the question marks after 'kidnapping'.

16 - All possibilities were on the table. The abduction theory was good for the investigation, according to Mr Amaral because it allowed more means, man power and tools to work with. It wasn't in the best interest of the investigation that the parents and friends were aware that they could be possible suspects. 12 hours after the disappearance a diplomat arrives at the PJ in Portimão. He was not happy and he was heard saying that the PJ 'wasn't doing anything'.

17 - Info from the British Police is late, unlike what normally happens in other cases. No infor on the couple, the friends or the children. It was important to be sure that Madeleine was their biological daughter. British Ambassador arrives. All this diplomacy is not normal according to Mr Amaral. 'Who is this couple?' 'Who are these friends?'.

18 - The searches go on. A helicopter is used and the OC employees are questioned. It's a battle against time because the following day /the 5th of May) is the day some of the potential witnesses are due to return to the UK. The press, Portuguese and British is already in PDL. Why was the press called in so quickly, apparently before the police?

19 - The apartment is checked for finger and hand prints, hair, fibres, blood and other biological evidence. Mistakes were made and Amaral underlines the person on the outside without a full suit on. No signs of break in and no prints of other people other than the ones who were supposed to have been at the apartment. No glove marks found either. A hand print is found and also fingerprints on the window from where Madeleiene was taken according to her parents. The hand print belonged to one of the first officers (A GNR? My question) who arrived at the scene.

20 - The road work being done in the streets of PDL was checked by workmen, police officers and sniffing dogs. The Tapas are formally questioned in Portimão (it's still the morning of the4th of May). First contradictions are detected. Jane Tanner 'saw' the abductor. Gerry and Jeremy were very close and did not see Jane or the abductor. The need for translation doesn't help because there is more time to think about what people should say. Kate and Gerry have no doubt that it is a kidnapping. Contradictions regarding the door and the window and shutters. (Open, closed, locked, unlocked, etc.)

Checks:

21h05: Gerry - all is well with the children.

21h10/21h15: Jane Tanner - Sees alleged abductor carrying a child.

21h30: Mathew Oldfield - enter the aprtment but not the bedroom and only sees the twins.

22h00: Kate - finds Madeleine missing.

21 - If the window was open why didn't Oldfield see it if at the time Jane Tanner had already seen the 'abductor'? Mathew says the door was slightly open. Kate states the door was completely open. (let's remember that the abductor was already supposed to have taken Madeleine before Oldfield checks).

22 - Kate mentions the 'abductor' mentioned by Jane but describes him in a completely different way. Jane said the man had light trousers and hair the lenghth of his neck. Kate says the abductor was wearing jeans and had long hair. (I'm sorry but I feel the need to comment here. I'm reading page 52 and how these people can be believed is a mistery to me).

23 - The description evolved. Now the abductor was 1.78 m tall, was wearing light trousers and a dark shirt and was carrying a child who seemed to be wearing pyjamas.

24 - I will be having a break soon for lunch and to watch Mr Amaral on Sic Channel.

25 - Jane's decription evolves again: it is now a dark skinned man, 35-40, thin, around 1,70 m, very thick and dark hair neck length, linen trousers beige or gold, Duffy' type jacket but not as thick, classic black shoes, was rushing and was carrying a child that weird way we all know (I'm surprised she missed his underwear!). By the way the man was dressed, Janes said he didn't look like a turist. The child was apparently sleeping and she only saw the legs. The child had no shoes on. Cotton pyjamas, light colour, possibly white or pink and maybe flowers on it. Jane said she would recognise the man from behind and by the way he walked.

26 - Jane said she didn't know what Madeleine was supposed to wear which surprised the police because 14 hours had passed and Gerry and Kate must have mentioned it, especially because Madeleine's description and clothes had been given to police officers, locals and turists who were looking for the missing child.

27 - There is footage of a girl looking like Madeline in one gas station. The parents are informed and Kate is asked to return to Portimão to see if it is Madeleine or not. Instead of being full of hope, Kate looks bored for being forced to return to Portimão and seems angry at the speed of the police car which startled police officers.

Having my break now. I have to say that what I'm doing isn't in any way a translation. I'm only summarising what I feel is more important. It would be impossible to translate everything so important details may be missed.

28 - First press release on the case. Special authorisation has to be requested. Lots of info starts to arrive, especially info from'psychics' and people who say they had visions and dreams about Madeleine (this reminds me of someone. Tee hee hee). Although they aren't credible, they are checked everytime it's possible. Several sketches of Madeleine with different hair cuts and colour are done.

Mr Amaral on TV. Then lunch. See you in a while.

29 - On the 4th of May the PJ stays in PDL past 10hoo because they want the sight the lighting conditions and other details. The police finds it surprising that Jane was able to see all those details because it was already quite dark and the visibility is not good. Where did the 'abductor' take Madeline? Was there a car? if there was why wouldn't anyone see it if the car had to be driven towards the centre of PDL? The beach was the most likely destination to anyone who would not wish to be seen. Gerry stated he entered the apartment using the main entance and using his key. Why? If the back entrance was a lot closer and it was apparently unlocked? Kate and Gerry say the aductor did not enter the apartment from the back entrance because they could see it from the Tapas bar and would have spotted him. That is a lie. And this lie is most likely intended to state that Madeleine and her twin brother and sister were safe and that there was no neglect. They were obviously not safe or Madeleine wouldn't be missing.

30 - Another weird aspect: so, the abductor enter through the door and leaves through the window carrying a child? Why not using the door again? It would be easier and it wouldn't be so suspicious. The police officers discuss their suspicions in the 'cruisis' room. The pressure due to the media frenzy starts to kick in.

Sorry, guys. Little break. Important phone call.

31 - Several statements about people acting in a strange way are checked. Some can be discarded but at least one cannot be fully investigated because in the meanwhile those people returned to their countries of origin. However, in that case it was possible to identify the flight and no sign of Madeleine. A gipsy camping site is also checked as well as more than 400 apartments and houses in PDL.

32 - The possibility of searching the Tapas apartments is discussed. The interest is to locate Madeleine clothes, the ones which she was wearing that day to check them for evidence of violence, for instance. However, at this stage it is considred that treating the Tapas as suspects might not be good for the inestigation. Mr Amaral consideres this, at present, a mistake. But there was too much pressure to investigate the abduction scenario.

33 - It seemed like it was forbidden to suspect the Tapas 7 or the parents. Diplomacy was always around. Publicly the case is treated as a kidnapping to avoid media speculation, although all possibilities are being investigated by the police and many question arise. The media frenzy gets bigger and bigger. The PJ has dificulties dealing with that. At the same time the preoccupation of the McCanns in dealing with the press is noticed.

34 - The PJ keeps an eye on their public appearances. All info is being checked and the PJ starts working on the mobile phones info. No communications which arise questions are detected, apart from Robert Murat who will later be made an arguido. The PJ check Kate and Gerry's phone records. Kate did not make any phone calls between the 27th April and the 4th of May which arises suspicions. And hasn't received any between 11h22 on the 2nd of May and 23h17 of the 3rd. Gerry's phone has no record of calls before the 4th at 00h15. But wait, there is a record on Kate's phone of a phone call from her husband on the 3rd May at 23h17. The same record doesn't exist on Gerry's phone. So the records were deleted. Why?

35 - An unconfirmed piece of news arrives at the PJ. Apparently the British secret services had, after the (whatever) crime, tapped the Tapas phones. If that was true the info was never sent to the PJ which also thought about tapping them but who feared the reaction if it was found out and also the refusal of the judge because at the time there wasn't strong reasons to do it.

I haven't colapsed. I'm just reading. It's impossible to translate it all so I'm selecting the more important passages. Don't worry, CM, I'm not leaving out any of the excerpts which will help you sue. :-)

I apologise for my more than likely spelling and grammar mistakes but it's impossible to go back and check it all. I'm reading and translating. Page 78 now.

36 - A bit of the life of the McCanns is described. Kate had a tiring life. Three children to take care of. Madeleine apparently wasn't an easy child. At the time of the holiday Kate was probably exhausted and had mentioned that before leaving for PDL she had a bad feeling/ an omen.

37 - The police found it weird that the children spent so much time in the créche but after interviewing the nannies they were told it was not a general rule but it was quite common. (My opinion, now: as CM would say, a cultural thing, apparently. Yeah, right.)

38 - Madeleine was at the créche the day she disappeared until 5h30. That was the last time anyone outside the group saw her. Madeleine was apparently very close to her dad and revealed an extreme love for her twin brother and sister. (I'm becoming soft because this passage just made me cry. Yep, dear pros, the evil bitch cries).

39 - During July and one of Gerry's visits to England, a British Police officer visited him at home. On the fridge there was a piece of paper with some of Madeleine's problems written on it. Madeleine apparently had problems sleeping and used to get up at night quite often. It is mentioned that Madeleine's grandfather admitted that the children were given something to help them sleep. Mr Amaral says this can explain why the twins did not wake up and that it also may have been the basis of Madeleine's tragic faith.

40 - Madeleine's health records were really important and were asked for with insistence. However, they were not sent. Historically, in these types of siuations, apparently the UK is not very cooperative. And the secrecy between doctors and patients was also a setback. Her eye detail may be related to other health problems but without medical records it was not able to confirm this.

41 - the 7th of May. leicester police officers start to arrive. Later, Scotland yeard also cooperated. Several leads are pursued, 'suspects' found but discarded. Lots of Madeleine sightings. Lots of checking regarding Madeleine sighting. The Morocco saga starts. Mr Amaral talks about the photo of the little girl in Morocco who looked like Madeleine (not really). Mr Amaral was informed and diligencies to confirm it were done. But Mr Amaral said that he stated it wasn't Madeleine (remember this was in September and by that time Mr Amaral was sure Madeleine was no longer alive).

42 - The McCanns were at the time of the Morocco sighting already arguidos and both the British and the Portuguese police agreed that Madeleine was dead. Howeevr, something strange happened. The British Police had shown the Mccanns the photo before informing the PJ about its existence. Apparently a british police officer showed them the photo, asked them if it was Madeleine and the McCanns answered:'it can be'. Gonçalo Amaral was surprised that they weren't sure. After all it was their daughter. We all know how this ended. The child and her mother were identified and it wasn't Madeleine.

43 - 23rd of May: according to Mr Amaral the McCanns contacted Gordon Brown on that day and the PJ knew for sure that now this would be a political case, not a police one.

44 - A man, apparently British who has an Asian background, spotted in a photo with Murat and also in a photo where Gerry is in a park with the children is investigated. Info is collected and the British Police checks him out and gets an identification. He is discarded as not having anything to do with Madeleine and as being in the park with his own daughter and then helping in the searches like hundreds of other turists. (I believe this is the man the pro brigade - Rosiepoophead and the rest of the mental bunch - identified as a dirty PJ who was most likely related to Madeleine's abduction. How embarassing, uh? lololol)

45 - The photo of the poor man reached the British press (unlike many of the interesting aspects of the case). Mr Amaral says he has no idea of how it got to the UK papers and why it was publsihed (Sorry, Mr Amaral, but I do have an idea why. Which would, obviously, also explain why the pro brigade concentrated so much in this poor guy. I guess orders are orders.).

46 - One of the turists tld the PJ that he had heard gerry McCann speaking on the phone ans saying that there are paedophile rings operating in Portugal and that they took Madeleine. Mr Amaral says it's fantastic that after some hours the father of a missing child knows what heppened to her with such certainty.

47 - It was thought to do the reconstruction in May bit that wasn't possible. The number of turists, the number of journalists and the fact that the air space having to be closed (because of helicopters from the media) and the fact that it would make the public suspect the McCanns were being treated as suspects prevented it.

48 - Mr Amaral thinks that the reconstituiton should have been made even one year after and even with the parents only, who were the ones who couldn't refuse to come. He believes it would be helpful (I think he means the inconsistencies).

49 - A Dutch guy contacts the McCanns saying he wants money in exchange for Madeleine/ info about Madeleine's whereabouts. The police gets involved (PJ, Leicester Police and Scotland Yard). The e-mail exchange continues. The guy wants two millions and 500 thousand in advance. All are stressed. All but Gerry who was enjoying a lollipop, reading trivialities on the internet and discussing rugby and football with a British Police officer (I understand the guy. I also love football), which surprised the Portuguese and the British Police. The guy was arrested and only wanted money. He confessed (stay calm, he didn't confess to the PJ, he confessed to the Dutch police, so we wasn't severely beaten/almost killed like those barbarian Portuguese police officers do with all suspects) he knew nothing about Madeleine.

To explain Gerry's cold ways a british officer usually commented with his Portuguese counterparts: "Don't forget the guy starts cutting people in half after breakfast."

P.S: need to strecht my legs. Be back in a little while.

Ok, back to reading. Sorry guys, but this takes time.

50 - Several Police Officers from several police forces arrive as well as specialists in different areas and profilers. On the 14th of may Kater felt very offended with the liaison officers because they asked her where her daughter was. The McCann couple would not tolerate those questions and doubts. Those liaison officers' job was to make a bridge between the parents and the PJ and suppor the parents in any way they needed, However, it didn't last a week. After that questions the McCanns decided they did not need them anymore. Noone could doubt those parents let alone officers from their own country, writes Mr Amaral.

51 - A Portuguese PJ officer leaves for the UK to help Leicester Police triage info. Three Leicester police officers have a meeting in Portimão with Luís Neves, Guilhermino Encarnação and Gonçalo Amaral. The PJ is informed about the 'incident' between the McCanns and the liason offcer(s). As time went by the PJ realised that the theory most pursued in Portugal (Madeleine's death) was not known by everyone in Leicester. A 'rookie' british Police officer arrived in teh Algarve and was wearing thw Look for Madleine wristband. Portuguese PJ's commented that soon he would not be waeraingit anymore, which happened as soon as he came in contact with the files.

52 - Mr Amaral gets a phone call from his scared wife. Somebody had killed one of the family dogs, a Shitzu who had a serious head injury. Mr Amaral went home but was in a hurry because he needed to go back to work and didn't want his children to see the dog like that. He decided that he should bury the dog but the ground was to hard. So he decided to take the dog and put it in the trash bin. While doing so he couldn't help think how easy it was for someone to dispose of a dead body. Amaral's wife asks him to leave the investigation because she is scared. Mr Amaral tells his wife she is not being rational and that there are no reasons to be worried.

(I got to page 100). God, I'm tired. :-)

53 - Murat's story. His villa called attention because it was very close to the crime scene and because apparently the abductor was seen walking in that direction. Amaral decides to check and is surprised when a colleague tells him that Murat offered to translate at the scene if it was necessary, since he spike both English and Portuguese (I have to confess I would have done exactly the same thing). The police had to resort to volunteers due to the amount of turists and employees (hundreds) that had to be spoken to, even if informally in the beginning. The PJ starts to check him out, especially after the british journalist's suspicion. The PJ decide that it will be better if they keep him close and continue to use him as a volunteer translator. Murat seems interested in everything regarding the investigation. He is said to consult internet sites of a sexual nature, but no more details are known. British profilers atart working on him and seem interested.

Sorry. Phone call. I have to speed things up and be more concise or I'll take days! :-)

54 - Murat is watched. The rental of a car is investigated and the villa and cars are searched. Jane Tanner incriminates Murat. No signs of Madeleine. Murat's clothes and other objects are collected to be analised.

(I'm leaving a lot of stuff out because it's not possible to translate everything. I'm only summarising the most important aspects.)

55 - Murat made an arguido, declines lawyer. Answers all questions. The question of the phone calls between Murat, Malinka and Michaela is investigated. Apparently the three met on the 2nd May because of the internet site.

56 - Several suspicions arise regarding Murat, Michaela, Malinka and Luís António. They are all investigated. No signs of Madeleine anywhere. After a pseudo friend of Murat from teenage times incriminates him for bestiality and other stange behaviours British profilers say that there's an 90% chance that Murat is Madeleine's abductor.

57 - I forgot to add that the 'pseudo friend' apparently has a long criminal record and the the PJ was not very convinced by his statement.

58 - Suddenly, on the 16th May, some friends of the McCanns remember seeing Murat on the scene that night close to the apartment. GNR officers said that they only saw him the next morning when he offered to translate. Rachel, Fiona, Russel and Murat are put face to face. The Tapas say Murat was there. Murat says they're lying. The Tapas say that they will come back to Portugal if needed, which won't happen.

59 - The Smiths see a man carrying a child wearing pink or white pyjamas and no shoes. The child has got medium/long blonde hair. The man is between 30-35, is thin but fit and wears light trousers. Mr Smith contacts the Irish Police and tells them about that. It states the man is not Murat but the girl was most likely Madeleine.

60 - The Payne incident, regarding the sexual nature gestures is described. The statement was given to the British police 13 days after Madeleine went missing but was only sent to the PJ by the end of Octover after Amaral left.

Payne's visit to apartment 5A on the 3rd of May: Gerry said Payne stayed 30 minutes, Kate said it was 30 seconds (those two need to talk more, I say). The reasons for the visit and number of visitors also have different versions. Yvonne, with experience in children matters, gets to talk to the McCanns and asks several questions which annoy Kate who believes the police should be asking the questions not Yvonne. Kate also says thata couple too ker child and cries a lot. The McCanns refuse Yvonne's help after contradicting themselves more.

61 - The room seems too tidied up and too cold. Everything in the right place. No signs od an abductor who would have needed to use something to get out of the window. No footprints anywhere, nothing. Suspicions of an intentional modification of the crime scene. According to Kate Cudle Cat was close to teh pillow when she found Madeleine missing (where the hell is the non existent shelf?) Again the fact that the bed sheets of the twins' cots not being there.

62 - (Just to let you know that there are many interesting little details that I'm leaving out because it would take forever but that are new to the ones reading the book). The Tapas wrote two lists which are on the files with the times of the checking until the alarm was raised. Inconsistencies in those two lists also. As sson as the alarm is raised, everyone rushed and enter the apartment but Dianne Webster stays for some minutes.

63 - The two different list prove that the checking timelines were discussed. In order to escape the neglect accusations, the checking times were so close that they made the abduction virtually impossible. Mathew was supposed two have passed twice close to the window through whcih Madleine had already been taken and yet fails to see the window wide open, although his mission ws to check if everything was ok with the kids.

64 - Both police forces discuss the huge amount of inconsistencies.

65 - Jane also never mentioned the window completely opened.

66 - How could Kate leave the twins alone again with a window supposedly open with an abductor close by?

In the beginning of June Kate starts taking about the possibility of Madeleine's death and about contacts made bt psychics who claimed they knew where Madeleine's body was. Mr Amaral said that it almost seemed like Kate could soon say where Madeleine's body was even if in an indirect way.

67 - The McCanns ask for Mr Krugel, the south african body finder to come to PDL. Both police forces thought the idea was a bit ridiculous but didn't want to be accused of not doing everything. The couple would now admit that Madeleine could be dead unlike what they were publicly and still are claiming. The are where Krugel said Madeleine0s body would be had already been searched by GNR and its dogs but it was searched again. Nothing was found.

68 - Amaral describes a case he investigated where a 3 year old was beaten to death by her father. He describes what a police officer but also a father feels in such a situation and discusses the possible motive, generally speaking, which may lead people to hide a body.

69 - Amaral aslo underlines the difficulty in investigating cases of missing people and cases with no body. The british sniffing dogs are suggested and they come to PDL. As we all know, they detect death scent and blood.

70 - Mark Harrison analises the whole file, visits PDL on foot and in an helicopter and writes a report in which he states that Madeleine is most likely dead and her body most likely hidden in PDL. He alsos praises the PJ for all the work and efforts to try and find Madeleine alive but thinks it is now time to do different searches, the searches needed to find a body. (damn, the pro brigade must be pissed).

71 - It was now time to investigate parents and friends in a more serious manner. The impressive record of Eddie and Keela is described.

Sorry, guys. A phone call that I really have to answer. Don't kill me...

72 - The dogs are taken to apartment 5A and, as we know, detect death scent and blood, Arounf 10 pm Gerry is seen by the investigators driving around. Nothing was detected by the dogs in any of the other apartments. The history of apartment 5A was checked because another person could have died there before. Noone did which was sadly revealing. The death scent dog was taken to the field. Nothing was found. The police was now sure the biggest mistake was not to tap the Tapas' phones and not to follow them closely. A judge refuses the requeste for the phones to be tapped. The villa where the McCanns were now staying was searched by the dogs. The dog detects death scent on Cuddel Cat. (and people say cats and dogs don't get along...)

Sorry guys, press conference with Gonçalo Amaral.

Gonçalo Amaral was just asked about his opinion on being sued. He answered that the McCanns come from the oldest democracy in the world, a country where freedom of expression is a right. He said he is not worried but if the McCanns so wish, they could go to court and discuss the files from the frist to the last page. I have a personal opinion on this, that I will share later.

73 - Nothing is found on Murat's villa. But the garden is so badly dug that it is found the ouse was built on the top of an ancient romam village. The cars are checked. The god only react on the car hired by the McCanns. After Amaral left the investigation, he came to know that a witness, o Portuguese woman, stated that in the days before the cars were checked the trunk of the car was left open which family explained was because of soiled nappies and beef fluid that was spilled in te car after they went shopping once (did I tell you that before my current activity I was a Hollywood star? :-) )

74 - Mr Amaral tells us that the decision to send the blood and hair to FSS in the UK was because it was a renowned laboratory and because if they were analised in Portugal or elsewhere, the PJ feared some would say the results had been messed with to incriminate the argudos in case the results were clear. The most likely possibility is that Madeleine apparently died near the sofa.

75 - Mr Amaral said that the assessment of the house showed two different realities. KAte seemed mourning. Several pictures from MAdeleine, rosaries, saints and a bible marked on Samuel's Book, Chapter 12, about the death of a child. Gerry's 'part' of the space was colder. Gerry seemed to have been reading The Interpretation of Crime fromJed Rubenfeld, Spirit Messenger by Gordon Smith and Will to Live by Lance Armstring. Besides that, there were also several CEOP books which are only for police work, which startled Mark Harrison.

76 - The first results start to arrive. The blood found in the car has a 50% match with Gerry coming, most likely, from an offspring. Then, one of the samples comes back as a weak match to Madeleine, inspite of all the markers in the sample being a match, many markers were missing. The second sample, however, gad a 15 out of 19 marker match to Madeleine's DNA profile. Another preliminary report is sent that contradicts the first findings. For example, regarding the trunk sample there is, this time, no mention about the 15 components of Madeleine's DNA profile, like they never existed. Stuart then call FSS asking if they thought the Portuguese were idiots. He was heard saying that in the UK he had arrested people for less.

77 - As for the hair, apparently nothing came of ir. The PJ wanted to know if they came from a living person or a dead one. FSS said they could not answer that question. British officers suggested sending the hairs to other labs in Europe but FSS apparently didn't want to lose/ give the hairs back.

The only fingerprints found on the window belonged to Kate. Because of the position of the hand it's more than likely that they gor there when Kate opened that window, whenerever that happened.

78 - The time of the question of the McCanns is close and Stuart seems nervous. The PJ also wished to re-questions the whole group. Very little info on the McCanns arrives regarding their financial situation. According to UK authorities the McCanns have no credit card or ATM cards. However, the flights had been paid with credit cards so the PJ knew they had them.

*SIC is saying that the McCanns are sueing. Gonçalo Amaral was asked if he told everything in his book. He said that he didn't say everything.

79 - Mr Amaral says that if the McCanns were in any way responsible for what happened to MAdeleine then the fund would be a fraud. As the fund was set up in England it would have to be investigated by the British police.

80 - The McCanns were informed about the re-questioning and that they would ba made arguidos, even for their own protection. She replied asking what would her parents and the press think and say.

81 - Kate's re-questioning was interrupted from 8pm till 10pm for all involved to rest and have dinner (this one is dedicated to the pro brigade, which were tearful because poor, little Kate was among those barbarian police officers and they didn't even feed her). As soon as she is made an arguida, Kate shuts up. Gerry is made an arguido, answers his questions and denies any involvment. The McCanns go back to England and when they arrive and go down the plane's steps Mr Smith in Ireland regonises Gerry as the mand he had nseen carrying a child on that night. He contacts the police when his return to Portugal is being taken care of when Mr Amaral is pushed from the investigation. Afterwards, the next person in charge for the case decides that Mr Smith can be interviewed in his country through a rogatory letter. We all know that nothing happened.

82 - Mr Amaral discusses the fact that he was removed from the case. Portual seemed to have succumbed to the pressure. The info on the McCanns and other Tapas never arrived. Amaral says that both Police forces agreed on the path the investigation took but that after the McCanns left all British Police officers left too. So, were they here to help with the invstigation or were they were because of the McCanns (I find this very, very intereting and I had never thought about this this way). Find the body and prove we did it is also mentioned as well as the McCanns need to discredit the dogs.

Along the way Mr Amaral neighbour's house is broken into and some documents are stolen. The hasty answer to the journalist, which got him out of the case is also mentioned. Amaral says thet he knew immediately it had been a mistake but that he never knew how serious it would be because his words were greatly exagerated. Amaral is pushed on his birthday and later he knows that Gordon Brown apparently called Stuart to ask him if the man in charge of the investigation had really been pushed.

83 - May 2008. Amaral shares a meal with his colleague Tavares Rodrigues. The Madeleine case comes up and both comment on the fact the their case is all on the files and nothing can change that.

CONCLUSIONS:

- Madeleine McCanns died in aprtment 5A on May the 3rd 2007.

- There was a simulation/fake of an abduction

- Kate and Gerry are suspects in the involvment of the disposal of their daughter's body.

- Madeleine's death may have been caused by a tragic accident.

- There is evidence of negligence regarding the guard and security of the children.

Then, Amaral says they did the best they could and worked hard to find out the truth. The truth which is the only thing that really matters in a universe which makes the truth of the lie more and more common.

THE END

Or maybe not.

Just wanted to tell you all that many things were left out. I hope you understand that I could not summarise everything. Some of the things I left out are not known to the public. Maybe they will be in the press. Or maybe you will read them when you buy your own copies in your own beautiful languages around the world. Thank you all for reading and thank you, especially, for caring for Madeleine and also for the men and women who worked like crazy to find out what happened to her. It's because of people like all of you that this world is a better place. The truth will always wins in the end.

And now, CM, you can bring in Scotland Yard. I really don't care as soon as your provide a bed to me. :-)

The Truth of the Lie

Gonçalo Amaral says that he wants “to put back the good name that was vilified in the public domain" without the Judicial Police allowing his own defence.

In the first pages of the work, the author highlights since then the unusual treatment given to the couple McCann, which in the words of the inspector were treated with "tweezers".

Much was spoken also about the attitudes of Gerry and Kate McCann and Gonçalo Amaral reports several situations in which he found the coldness of the couple strange facing the tension of the investigations.

In one of the situations the inspector speaks about the mother of the child, Kate, who before the possibility to find the daughter appears bothered with the speed reached by the car of the police. [This was after a new information of a possible sighting of Madeleine was given to the police, the mother instead of being anxious looked annoyed with the entire situation]

In another case it was the father who aroused the attention of the inspectors: in the middle of a negotiation, with a possible kidnapper, the doctor “was sucking casually one lollipop while reading banalities in sites of the Internet and talking about rugby and football with one of the English police officers.”

Gonçalo Amaral believes that "Madeleine died in the apartment 5A of the Ocean Clube, on the 3rd of May of 2007, but he does not discard the hypothesis of having been accidental".

Contacted by SIC, Rogério Alves, he refused to comment on the book by Gonçalo Amaral. “While lawyer of the family McCann, I only comment reality, I do not comment fiction", said the lawyer.

Excerpts of the book “The Truth of the Lie "

P. 11 “This book appears out of the necessity that I felt of putting back my good name that was vilified in the public domain without the PJ has allowing me to stand up for myself ”.

P. 19 “The mistake was that we treated the couple 'with tweezers'. They were treated with privileges. It is that, that is not normal”.

P. 26 “It seems that the Judiciary Police is a ‘stepmother’ [Portuguese expression, meaning the PJ as an institution was never good to its officers] with its servants, it never knew how to defend them ”.

P. 38 “It was pertinent to know if Madeleine was the biological daughter of the couple McCann, the information requested does not arrive, but the English ambassador is already arriving. It is not normal this preoccupation of the English diplomacy ”.

P. 48 “A hand print was found in the balcony window at the rear [of the apartment]. It was corresponding to one of the police elements ”. (protocol of proceedings is lacking)

P. 54 Sightings: “Kate appears bored because of having being obliged to return and bothered with the speed reached by the police car We found strange that she didn’t show signs of hope with the possibility of the girl being recovered ”.

P. 67 “The PJ should have had persons to analyse all the news, being preoccupied by what the parents and friends would say to the public opinion. What did not happen ”.

P. 68 “It is not usual that common citizens, to whom a daughter just had disappeared, nominate press advisers”

P. 71 “The English service secret already had, after the facts, the couple and the group of friends under surveillance. If that was right such an information was never accessed by the Portuguese police”

P. 81 “The medical registries (of Madeleine) requested with insistence were not given to us, due to great difficulties raised in England”. P. 92 Attempt of extortion "Gerry McCann was sucking casually one lollipop while he was reading banalities in sites of the Internet and was talking about rugby and football with one of the English police officers.” Sentence of the English police officers “Do not forget that he starts cutting people in half shortly afterwards of the breakfast”.

P. 165 “There were signs of death in the apartment. It was concluded that that cadaver odour could only came from Madeleine McCann”.

P. 168 “The toy had cadaver odour”

P. 214 Conclusions “Madeleine died in the apartment 5 A on the 3rd of May of 2007 A simulation of kidnapping took place Kate and Gerry are suspected of corpse's occultation [hiding the cadaver]The death might have happened as a result of an accident There are signs of negligence in the safe keeping and security of the children”

I just read that the McCann lawyers will read each passage very carefully to assess it and decide if they sue or not. Man, that will take a lot of underlining... Oh, and I would advise them to take a peek at today's edition of Correio da Manhã.

Pre-publication of Amaral's book on Correio da Manhã (II)
“Madeleine died in the apartment”

Correio da Manhã starts today the pre-publication of excerpts from the book of Gonçalo Amaral (“The truth of the lie”) and publishes also an interview with the author (not yet on-line, at this moment). Those excerpts refer to a statement from a witness – identified as K.G., married with S.G, who contacted British police, on May 16, 2007, thirteen days after Madeleine's disappearance, to report what is described in the book as incidents that raised “serious doubts about the behaviour of David Payne concerning children.”
Mr. Amaral says that until he was in charge of the investigation, British police didn't send the report of that witness to Polícia Judiciária. The PJ Criminal Coordinator was removed from the investigation on October 2, 20007. Mr. Amaral believes that the report only reached Portuguese police “at the end of October” last year.

Other situation explained in detail, in the excerpts published by Correio da Manhã, is the confusion around the results of the analysis to the blood samples collected at the apartment from where Madeleine disappeared and in the boot of the car the McCann rented, more than 20 days after their daughter went missing. According to Mr. Amaral, a specially trained dog (from the South Yorkshire Police force, Keela) has detected traces of blood in the floor of the apartment, behind a sofa, and also in the car's boot. The former PJ investigator mentions a report by British police officers Mark Harrison and Martin Grime, which was one of the reports used to support PJ's decisions in the investigation, that stated clearly the dog only reacted to the presence of samples of human blood.

Pre-publication of Amaral's book on Correio da Manhã (III)
DNA profiles, Forensic Science Service and inconclusive results
In the first days of September, Superintendent Stuart Prior, from Leicestershire Constabulary, went to Portimão, taking with him “a first preliminary report” from the results of the analysis of the samples collected at Praia da Luz, including those obtained with the help of South Yorkshire Police dogs Eddie and Keela, to discuss with PJ investigators how the investigation was developing. During the meeting, Stuart Prior “revealed that he was disappointed with the results of the analysis”, made at Forensic Science Service, in Birmingham, writes Mr. Amaral, according to Correio da Manhã. The Portuguese team of investigators also read the report and they didn't agree with the conclusions of Stuart Prior.
Concerning the first sample, found in the apartment's floor, the report showed “an incomplete DNA profile” with “low quality DNA traces from more than one person. But all DNA components identified coincided with the corresponding components from Madeleine's DNA profile.” The two above mentioned samples, analysed at FSS, were “blood traces”, according to Mr. Amaral, “because the CSI dog is trained to detect only that body fluid”, a fact that he says is confirmed on a report prepared by “experts Mark Harrison and Martin Grime”, both British police officers assigned to go to Praia da Luz with Eddie and Keela.
After an explanation about the components from Madeleine's DNA profile, the conclusion was that 15 of the19 alleles of Madeleine's DNA profile were found in the analysis to the second sample of blood, took from the boot of the McCann rented car. “According to FSS experts, those 15 (alleles) were not enough to come to the conclusion, with a high degree of reliability, that it was Madeleine's DNA profile, even because the Low Copy Number (technique) found 37 components in that sample.”
Mr. Amaral refers also that the existence of 37 components was justified, in the FSS report, with the fact that, at least, DNA from three different persons “had contributed to that result” and emphasizes what he considers a “bizarre precaution” from the scientist that prepared the report: he explained that “in most DNA profiles of the laboratory experts, the components of Madeleine's DNA profile are also found.” He regrets that “in spite of having found 15 components of Madeleine's DNA profile” in the sample taken from the rented car, “results (of the analysis) were considered not conclusive.”

"Madeleine died in apartment''

The 'CM' begins to be published today, exclusively excerpts from the book of Gonçalo Amaral, who believes that Madeleine McCann died in apartment in Praia da Luz The episode of holidays of 2005, in Majorca - they are raised suspicions about a friend the couple - and the results of DNA are the first excerpt.

Madeleine Beth McCann, with 2 ½ years, and their twin brothers at the time with few months old, departing on vacation in the company of parents to the island of Majorca. Together with three other couples they go to doctors with their children. [...] SG had attended the University of Dundee, between 1987 and 1992, there has known the future mother of Madeleine. KG only came to know Gerry McCann in this marriage with Kate Healy, around 1998, in Liverpool. After that event, the couple SG KG and become close friends of the parents of Madeleine and is a regular, passing week-end together, maintaining contact by phone.
In the third or fourth night in Majorca, after dinner, eating and drinking, when they were seated around a table in a courtyard outside the house, KG attends a scene that has caused fear for the welfare of her daughter and other children. She was seated between Gerry McCann and David Payne, when he heard the latter ask if she, perhaps referring to Madelein, would do 'this', starting in the act following a suck their fingers, which hinders the mouth and rising, suggesting a phallic subject, while with the fingers of the other hand, formed circles around the nipple, as a provocative and sexual gesture. At a time when KG looked with amazement to Gerry McCann and David Payne, it was made a nervous silence. After all the talk continued as if nothing had happened. This episode caused KG in a serious doubt about the relationship of David Payne with children. In yet another occasion, KG would see David Payne to make the same gestures, this time speaking of their daughter. In that period of leave were the parents who gave bath for children, but from there KG never left the David Payne closer to their daughter. After these holiday in Majorca, KG only found the couple David and Fiona Payne on one occasion, not talking to them since then.
What is written above was reported on May 16, 2007, only thirteen days after the disappearance of Madeleine English to the police, the couple SG and KG It was an important and relevant information for research. However, nothing was sent to the Portuguese police.
I believe that only after my departure of research, perhaps in late October 2007, is that the testimony of KG has been referred to the Portuguese police. With legitimacy question is: which is why the British police Tuesday, apparently, hidden evidence that during six months? When they heard that David Payne, organizer of the trip to Majorca, and who were reported abnormal behaviour in dealing with children, was the same which organised the trip to Portugal, which was part of the group of the holiday village of Luz where Madeleine was part, that was the first friend of the family to be seen next to Kate McCann after the disappearance of the child (as we shall see below) and that the date of the testimony was still in Portugal and may be confronted with these statements?

In the first days of September, just days before the constitution and accused the couple McCann, the Superintendent Stuart Prior, goes to the Portimão. It brings with it a preliminary report [of the forensic laboratory in Birmingham], coming discuss the status of the investigation with us. In a meeting with the investigating team Portuguese and English, in our office, Stuart shows up disappointed with the results of the examinations. It starts here the saga of the reports of the FSS. We read the report and we do not agree with the disappointment of Stuart. They are concerned the traces collected blood on the floor, behind the couch of the apartment 5A, as well as traces of blood recovered boot of the car used by McCann. We talk about blood traces (blood) because the dog is trained CSI only to detect that body fluid. The reports to support decision-making, prepared by specialists Mark Harrison and Martin Grime, are clear: the dog CSI was used to locate human blood. The Low Copy Number, technique used to determine the DNA of those samples, does not determine that body fluid comes from the DNA. In the first case, you can read that which obtained a result of incomplete DNA, for little information in the sample, giving indications of low-level DNA from more than one person . But all components of DNA confirmed coincide with the corresponding components of the DNA profile of Madeleine!
The second case, after an explanation of the components of the DNA profile of Madeleine, concluding that it is represented by 19 alleles, it appears that 15 are present in the sample examined. In other words, there are 4 components to have a 100% conclusive result. According to the experts that laboratory, those 15 have not arrived to finish with a great degree of certainty, that this was the DNA profile of Madeleine, because the Low Copy Number 37 components found in the sample. There 37 components because at least three individuals contributed to this result. Despite having been found 15 components of the DNA profile of Madeleine, the result was considered complex.
But it turned around here this first preliminary report. In it, the scientist has been strangely careful to explain that in many of the profiles of the experts of the laboratory are present elements of the DNA profile of Madeleine. In other words, much of the DNA profile of any one person can be constructed by three donors. It is understandable. The first two issues have arisen. The first: to that served in terms of criminal evidence, a profile of DNA, if it can be a combination of three or more donors.
Another question was simple: why is that the DNA profile of those three donors contributed to 15 components of the DNA profile of Madeleine and not by any other person, for example, of the scientist who carried out the examination? But the surprises of the preliminary reports would not be here. [...] [...]

Gonçalo Amaral decided to write the book to recover its freedom of expression. Away from research by Alípio Ribeiro, the former coordinator of PJ of Portimão believes Madeleine McCann died in the apartment of the Ocean Club on the night of May 3, 2007. And also believes that parents simulated the abduction and hid the corpse of her daughter, after a tragic accident inside the apartment.
Tomorrow: Get to know some more hot spots of the book which tells another
version of the investigation and that MCCann did not want to see published. Read the interview with the author.

Oh, really? Interesting timing...

'DNA error by British experts led to McCanns being accused'

By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 11:03 AM on 21st July 2008

Two key blunders led to Kate and Gerry McCann being declared suspects in their daughter Madeleine's disappearance, a leaked report claims today.
One of the mistakes relating to DNA tests on samples collected in Portugal was made by the British Forensic Science Service
, the Portuguese document said.
The report, prepared by Portugal's attorney-general, Fernando José Pinto Monteiro, claims the two crucial errors led to the doctors from being made 'arguidos' in the case.
It was revealed as Mr Monteiro prepared to formally clear the McCanns, both doctors from Rothley, Leicestershire, and shelve the case.

Blunders: Kate and Gerry McCann became suspects after the British Forensic Service reported that DNA found in their hire car belonged to Madeleine
According to today's report, the Policia Judiciaria - Portugal's criminal investigation department - were told that DNA evidence found in the couple's hire car, on the window sill of their holiday apartment and in the car park of the apartment complex, belonged to Madeleine.
The report claims it was categorically given as her DNA and as a result the McCanns were questioned and later made suspects, according to London's Evening Standard.
But exactly one month later the forensic service wrote another report saying it could not be sure those findings were correct or whether the samples belonged to Madeleine, her younger sister Amelie or her mother.

As police close Maddie case, McCanns face new agony over book by former investigation chief

The claim is likely to cause the FSS embarrassment. Last week representatives of the service went out to Portugal with Leicestershire police to try to prevent the information being made public.
The second error was that when 'cadaver dogs' smelled the scent of death in the apartment where Madeleine disappeared, detectives did not take into account that Mrs McCann, who is a GP, had come into contact with six patients who died before she went on holiday.
Mark Williams-Thomas, a former police officer and a child protection expert, who has knowledge of the report, which dedicates 50 pages to the DNA evidence, said it was 'damning'.
'The FSS was out in Portugal on a damage limitation exercise,' he said. 'They will lose credibility over this.'

Mystery: Madeleine vanished from her parents holiday apartment in Praia da Luz last May

There is also strong condemnation of the police for paying too much attention to the media and evidence given by the dining friends the Tapas seven is criticised as they are accused of contradicting each other.
The report also talks about two key witnesses. One who contacted the police on 26 May saying he saw Mr McCann carrying Madeleine away from the apartment on the night she disappeared later retracted his statement.
The other witness spoke of the behaviour of the McCanns throughout their stay in Portugal.
According to the report, the police vis- ited 443 homes in the area, sightings were examined and ruled out and they also looked at all land, sea, and air escape routes.
The report says there is a strong belief by both British and Portuguese police that Madeleine is dead.
As they waited for news of the report, the McCanns were aiming to spend today as routinely as possible.
Mr McCann, a consultant cardiologist, intended to 'go to work as normal' at the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester.
Madeleine vanished only six days before her fourth birthday on 3 May last year. Her parents, both 40, launched an international campaign to search for her.
Fourteen months on, the Policia Judiciaria is no closer discovering what happened to her.
It is understood that even if the case is shelved, the files will be periodically reviewed and could be reopened if new evidence emerges.
Once they are cleared, the McCanns, who have two other children, twins Sean and Amelie, will fight for access to all the police documentation to give to their own private investigators so they can continue the search for their daughter.
The couple have already secured access to some of the files on the case after Leicestershire police agreed to share 81 pieces of information with them - relating to tip-offs and possible sightings - received in the early stages of the investigation last year.
The two parties reached the compromise at the High Court in London earlier this month.
Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for the family, said: 'The hope is that they will be given access to the files. This will be a chance to reinvigorate the case.'
The McCanns' private investigators, Spanish-based Metodo 3, as well as a British-based agency will now conduct their own inquiries.
Madeleine vanished from her family's holiday apartment in the Ocean Club, Praia da Luz, as her parents dined in a tapas restaurant with friends nearby.
The third arguido Algarve property consultant Robert Murat, 34, is also expected to have his 'arguido' status lifted.
Despite Portuguese legal moves, the McCanns were also bracing themselves today for more emotional turmoil as the policeman in charge of the original investigation was revealed to be publishing a 'tell-all' book this week.
Gonçalo Amaral, who was sacked as head of the inquiry in October, took early retirement last month.
Mr Amaral, 48, authorised the decision to name the McCanns as official suspects and his book, called True Lies, will be released in Portugal this week.

Oh, so now the mistakes were on the FSS, not on the PJ. Interesting timing. Is it because the reports will be in the files which will eventually be made public and once that happens there is no way to spin it?

Also very interesting that the British press decides to publish this today when this has been said in the Portuguese press for months...

So, the FSS is incompetent and the technicians working there are thick idiots, according to this article.

And dog handlers in Britain, who work with dogs which are trained to detecte death scent, never knew that Gerry and Kate McCann are doctors and may have been in contact with people who die (by the way, Kate is a very unlucky woman. I'm glad she doesn't work as a GP anymore. I never knew of a GP who was in contact with so many dead bodies. Jesus, did they just drop dead in her presence?).

Witnesses saw and suddenly didn't see, lab results who were but then weren't anymore. Is it just me or does this stink as much as the soiled nappies in the boot of the hire car?

So, the British Police agrees with the PJ that Madeleine is dead? And why say it now? It wouldn't be because there is proof of that in the files wihich will become available, right?

If this wasn't a tragedy it would be hilarious. Do these people think the world is as thick as they think it is? Some things cannot be spinned. One day, Madeleine. One day.

P.S:

This is the comment I submitted to the Daily Mail regarding the artice I copy pasted in this thread:

"Oh, so now the bungles were on the FSS not on the PJ? Interesting timing. It couldn't be because the files which will soon become public will show the whole world the preliminary report from FSS, could it? It couldn't be because as soon as the files become public the world will see why they were made arguidos, could it? Too late now."

What the Daily Mail published was the following:

"Oh, so now the bungles were on the FSS not on the PJ? "

Interesting or what? Isn't the UK a democracy? Was my comment insulting in any way? Or wasn't it approved by a certain team?

When Silence Speaks Loud

English defended the use of the dogs - Correio da Manhã

Traces – Finding the trail of a death changed the direction of the investigation

An exhaustive report explains the possible scenarios to hide a body and defends the animals’ reliability

Mark Harrison, the English police who was designated to help the Polícia Judiciária in the search for Madeleine McCann, wrote a report last summer, in which he defended the usage of the dogs that are experts in the detection of cadaver odours and blood traces. The discovery of the residues and the signaling of the trail of a cadaver thus ended up formally changing the direction of an investigation that had been limited to the theory of abduction until then. The report, which praises the Portuguese authorities’ work, suggested that the animals should be taken to all the locations where the body might have been hidden. From the apartment that had been rented by the McCanns up to the crèche, through the beach and the church area.

Mark Harrison explained that it was necessary to analyse the scenarios of Madeleine having been killed that night and her body abandoned by a person on foot or by car. The expert added that despite of the high costs of that search, it should be carried out in order to clarify the case.

Dogs are reliable

In the report, Mark Harrison says that it us very unlikely that the body was buried in the sand. The English policeman defends that a launch into the sea is the most likely scenario, while the body should also be searched for within an area of cliffs and dense bushes that lies east of Praia da Luz.

The two English dogs were presented as an indispensable help to the investigation, after their abilities and the manner in which they are trained were explained in detail, as well as the fact that they both react to blood traces and cadaver odours, without a single episode of “false positives” in the investigations. In his report, Mark Harrison listed cases of success that offered a guarantee of reliability. And he asserted that if the dogs came to signal Maddie’s death, then it would be a fact.

Details

High costs - Mark Harrison stressed the high costs of the dogs. Their daily rate amounted to one thousand euros; the cost of the trip for them and their handlers was of 2750. There was also the cost of the passport for the animals (450 euros), adding to the lodging, the food and the transportation of the vehicles that were necessary for the animals.

False positives – Eddie, the dog that specialized in cadaver odour detection, has never given a false alert. He has participated in approximately 200 searches in homicide scenarios in Great Britain and never signaled any products that derived from meat or any other food item.

Human blood – Keela was trained exclusively with human blood; blood that is subject to strict testing and which comes from hospitals. She locates contaminated guns, smells vehicles and clothing items, and accurately detects residues, even if the locations are subject to cleaning.

Kate refused to answer the PJ

Kate refused to answer tens of questions from the Polícia Judiciária. After the first day of questioning, when she appeared in the company of her lawyer but was heard as a witness, Kate changed her stance. Being made an arguida and the fact that the authorities assumed that they admitted her involvement in the disappearance of her daughter Madeleine, led her to adopt a different attitude. She refused to reply, for example, why she left the twins behind in the bedroom in order to call her husband and friends at the restaurant, after finding out that Maddie had disappeared. She also failed to explain why she had not searched for her daughter in the first moments, sitting on the bed almost without moving, and she offered no explanation for the fact that the preliminary test results from the English lab detected traces in the car boot and behind the sofa, traces whose DNA resembled Maddie’s.

Other details from her personal and professional life remained unanswered. Kate refused, for example, to explain whether or not it was true that before the holidays she had admitted she had a bad premonition. Whether or not she had ever complained that the twins were very restless or had ever admitted to deliver the guard of Maddie to a relative. Kate also remained expressionless when she was confronted with the possibility that she had quit working because she could not handle the pressure of raising he three small children. She did not explain how the cadaver odour was found on her clothes and on the soft toy that was normally used by Maddie, or why the dogs marked the death inside the apartment.Kate also chose not to clarify who had called Sky News, nor did she reveal whom she had called in the moments that immediately followed the disappearance. In her deposition, Kate was also confronted with the fact that her refusal to make a statement might hinder the discovery of her daughter’s whereabouts. Nevertheless, she kept her silence.

Mother’s DNA on the window

The window had been forced open and the abductor had taken the child through it. That was the first possibility that was advanced by Kate to the authorities that collected residues on location. But the tests that were done at the IML [Portuguese forensics institute] ended up isolating just one DNA which did not belong to the child but rather to Kate. To the PJ, it is also practically impossible for anyone to carry the child out of that window, which does not even open completely.

Gerry accepted to speak to the police

On the day that he was made an arguido, Gerry accepted to answer all of the Judiciária’s questions.

Doubts about surveillance on the children

The PJ found contradictions in the friends’ testimonies concerning the manner in which the children were watched over

Denied the use of sedatives on the children

Kate and Gerry have always denied to the PJ that they medicated the children or used any sedative to make them sleep. Maddie’s parents thus stated that their children went to bed early simply because they were used to that, and it was not even usual for them to wake in the middle of the night. CM knows that months after Maddie disappeared, Kate suggested to the Judiciária that the twins should be tested in order to find out whether they had been sedated that night. Something that the investigators found strange, given the fact that being doctors, they both knew that any residue would have disappeared by then. This was considered to be another indicator that Kate and Gerry were not telling the whole truth about what happened on the 3rd of May, hiding what had happened to the child.

Notes

Recorded PJ taped action – The dogs’ search was recorded by the Polícia Judiciária. The handler also wrote an extensive report that translated the signs that had been detected by the animals during their search for traces.

TIR English address – Kate stated her identity and her residence and gave her English address. Therefore, the return home was not considered to be an escape from justice.

Return Postponed promise – When they returned home, the McCanns promised to return if it was necessary to make a statement. The reconstitution was requested, but the friends boycotted it.

So, according to this article:

1 - The abduction theory was investigated until exhaustion and the investigation only changed direction when the sniffing dogs, which were recommended by the British authorities arrived and marked someone's death inside apartment 5A.

2 - As far as it is known, nobody ever died inside that apartment but Madeleine Beth McCann went missing there while her parents left her, Sean and Amelie so they could have a nice meal and some drinks in the company of their good friends. Do the maths.

3 - Members of the British Police agreed that the dogs are extremely reliable and that Madeleine is no longer alive.

4 - A British Police officer wrote a report prasing the PJ work and efforts (Ouch!!!)

5 - "Harrison says that it us very unlikely that the body was buried in the sand. The English policeman defends that a launch into the sea is the most likely scenario (...)" No comments!

6- "In his report, Mark Harrison listed cases of success that offered a guarantee of reliability. And he asserted that if the dogs came to signal Maddie’s death, then it would be a fact." No comments again.

7 - A mother of a missing child whose whereabouts supposedly noone is aware of refuses to answer questions that may help authorities find what heppened to the child. Hmmm...

8 - The 'abductor' entered and left throuh a window carrying Madeleine yet the only DNA found is Kate's. This 'abductor' must be a part-time magician.

9 - I find it interesting that Gerry answered the questions but Kate refused to.

10 - The suggestion to test Sean and Amelie for sedatives months after Madeleine vanished is also interesting.

11 - The reconstruction that never was - we will go back as soon as requested vs no way we will go back.

12 - Poor parents. Did everything they could to help authorities. Answered every question. Came back everytime it was necessary. Boarded every plane everytime Madeleine was sighted in so many different places of the world. Stayed put when the police made them arguidos and refused to leave the place they promised they would never leave until what happened was found. Used the money that was donated to them in a wise manner hiring well known and competent detective agencies like M3 who came up with so much more info than the PJ and the British Police. Refused to use the money for personal purposes like making mortgage payments. Behaved like loving, responsible parents and sacrificed their holidays so their children could be with them at all times. Still the guilt can't leave them alone and everytime they are interviewed they punish themselves and alert people to keep an eye on their children at all times because not doing so can bring tragic results. Poor, poor parents.

Coincidencies...

From Astro - translation of today's Correio da Manhã

Doctor friends of the McCanns spoke to the English police

Payne suspected of paedophilia

Twelve days after Maddie disappeared, a couple revealed the strange behaviour of one of the group's members. Testimonies only reached the Judiciária in January this year

David Payne, one of the McCanns' friends that were on holidays in the Algarve on the 3rd of May last year, when Madeleine disappeared, was suspected of paedophile behaviours.
The accusations were brought by a couple of friends that spent their holidays with part of the group in the summer of 2005 – themselves also English doctors. Twelve days after the British girl disappeared, Katherina and Arul could no longer keep the secret that had bothered them for two years and went to the police to make a statement. They revealed two conversations between Dave and Gerry, during which both revealed suspicious behaviour and indiciated sex with minors.

According to what CM was able to establish, the depositions were given on the 16th of May. But they only entered the process in January 2008 and are included in the 13th volume of the process files. At that point in time, Kate and Gerry were already arguidos, the rogatory letters had already been issued and the English, including Dave, showed their reluctance in returning to Portugal.

Touching the nipple

Katherina made a statement that was eight pages long. She reported holidays in Mallorca with several English [people], including the McCanns and the Paynes. Two incidents left her with serious doubts about the friends' behaviour and lead her to create suspicions that were never confirmed.

The first one happened on a night when Gerry and Dave were talking about Maddie. Katherina does not know what they were saying but she remembers that Dave sucked on his fingers, pushing them into the mouth and pulling them out again, while his other hand traced a circle around the nipple, with a circular movement over the clothes. "That was done in a provocative manner", recalls Katherina, who says that it stuck to her memory.

Days later, the scene repeated itself. The doctor saw Dave making the same gestures again, while he talked about his own daughter. Scared, Katherina said nothing about the incident. But she took special caution, asking her husband never to let the doctor come close to the bathroom when her daughter was having a bath.

Arul went to the police to tell the same story. Katherina's companion confirmed the gestures that were made by Dave during the conversation with Gerry but asserted that he wasn't aware that they were talking about Maddie. He did find the behaviour in extremely bad taste, but didn't see it being repeated.

The incident ended up forgotten in his memory and it was only the disappearance of Madeleine, who had also been with them on the Mallorca vacation, that revived it.

During the deposition, Katherina went even further and said she had associated the gestures to someone who likes to watch child pornography. "I remember thinking whether he looked at the girls in a different manner", she concluded.

Friends from school days

Arul and Kate were friends from their school days. They have known each other for approximately 20 years and that was the motive that led the couple to accompany the McCanns on their holidays to Mallorca. Arul and Katherina did not know Fiona and Dave and they only met again once, during a dinner that gathered several couples. When Maddie disappeared from the Ocean Club, Katherina remembered the incident in Mallorca. And she immediately tried to verify whether Dave had again been accompanying the McCann couple, as the suspicions about his behaviour still stood. In the deposition that was made to the English police, Katherina says she decided to give a statement when she saw the tv images. Dave was among the same holiday group.

Doubts in the case

Irishman not heard – An Irishman who was spending holidays in Praia da Luz also went to the English police to report that on the night of the 3rd of May he saw Gerry carrying Madeleine towards the beach. He was never heard through a rogatory letter.

Sending delayed – The difference between the date when the deposition was obtained and the time when it was sent is not explained in the process.CM knows that the English authorities did not provide an explanation, either.

Bank account info – The PJ tried to know the bank account situation of every element of the group, in order to search for possible motives for the crime. But the English answers were laconic and did not help the investigation.

Life stories – The life stories of Gerry and Kate McCann remain unknown. The PJ tried to verify whether Maddie's mother suffered from depression but never received her clinical records, because the judge did not allow it.

Kate accused of conditioning the case

An intercalary report from the Polícia Judiciária, which was produced immediately before Kate and Gerry were made arguidos, accuses Madeleine’s parents of having conditioned the investigation. The document is signed by an inspector and was directed to Gonçalo Amaral, who was then coordinating the process. The investigator then stated that the information that had been collected initially, was worked by the group in order to sustain the abduction theory. He guarantees that they all lied to protect themselves and even suggests that some could have been covering the crime up.

The testimony from Janne Turner [sic]*, who guarantees that she saw a man crossing the street with a child in his arms, is also questioned. The policeman said that Janne [sic] was only two or three metres away from Gerry but he failed to see the man. And that, by stating that the man was headed towards Murat’s house, she ended up orienting the investigation into a false direction, which led to an unnecessary waste of time. The same report exposes other contradictions in the English’s depositions. Kate and Gerry say that they picked up their children from the crèche at 5.30 p.m., but while the former guarantees that they went for a half-hour run on the beach and only then returned to the apartment, her husband states that they went to play tennis during that period. After that, at around 8 p.m., one of the elements of the group reportedly went to the apartment that had been rented by the couple. Kate says that he was there only for 30 seconds and then left. Gerry speaks about half an hour. The policeman remembers that the time difference is what is needed between asking whether everything is well, or advancing in case a crime has to be concealed.

Another situation that the authorities found strange was the fact that Kate, upon realizing that Maddie had disappeared, remained inside the apartment for ten minutes. Only then did she ask for help, leaving the twins asleep in their cots while she returned to the restaurant. The policeman who wrote the report asks how it is possible that a mother facilitates the safety of her other children when it is certain that by that time she was already screaming that her daughter had been abducted.

They could not see the apartment

Another contradiction was pointed out by the inspector who was in charge of the Maddie case. The policeman remembered that the McCanns asserted that their position inside the restaurant was a strategic one, so they could see the apartment where their children were sleeping. But according to several testimonies, Kate and Gerry had their backs turned to the apartment.

CM shows the difficulty in abducting Maddie

For the first time, a Portuguese member of the media shows images from inside the apartment, namely the room from where the English Minor Madeleine McCann disappeared from, on the 3rd of May last year. Here the images and the infographics try to reconstitute the steps of an imaginary abductor, but also the state in which the PJ found the crime scene.

PJ admitted a simulation of the scenario

The arrival of the dogs that detected cadaver odours and blood traces led the PJ to admit that some of the details where Maddie had been sleeping had been staged to sustain the abduction theory. One of the examples that were pointed out in one of the many reports that were written by the investigators was the fact that the soft toy was on the bed where Maddie slept, a bed that was partially undone. The animals detected odours on the child’s toy, but they did not mark her death on that spot. Which led the PJ to admit that Maddie had died in another area of the house, and then the toy was taken to the bed because it was the most likely spot in case of an abduction. Other details were analysed, like the fact that the furniture was too well positioned and the sofa was completely pushed against the wall.

DetailsInvestigated leads – The final report is clear. All the leads were investigated, the abduction theory was verified into detail. But the investigation’s main conclusions pointed towards the death of the child in the apartment, on the 3rd of May.

300 policemen were looking for Madeleine McCann during the first days. The PJ stresses that many among them spent several weeks sleeping only a few hours.

2000 diligences were made by the Judiciária during their search for Madeleine. International cooperation was requested on several moments, to exclude several cases of false sightings.

High costs – The PJ spared no costs throughout this investigation. Millions of euros were spent on the investigation into the disappearance, namely on the high payments that were made to the labs that collected the genetic profiles.

Suspicions – Dave’s involvement is considered again

Parents refused technical help

Works with endangered children and approached the McCanns in the Algarve. Found the behaviour strange Yvone, who earned credentials from the English government to work in situations that involve endangered children, was in the Algarve when Maddie disappeared but the McCanns refused her help. The specialist told the PJ, during two depositions that were made one month apart from each other, that she approached the couple after the first few hours and that the behaviour from both left her with suspicions about their involvement in the disappearance.

The behaviour of David Payne, who was accused by a couple of doctors that spent holidays with him in 2005, of having attitudes that indiciated paedophile practices, also left Yvone intrigued. The McCanns’ friend had called them aside and advised them not to speak to the technician.Yvone found another detail strange. David’s face was not unfamiliar to her, and the technician believes he might have been inquired before, within some case of sexual abuse. She tried to remember when but failed to locate moment and the circumstances under which she had met him.The days went by and Yvone continued to think about the issue. She then sent a letter to the English police, where she pointed out the details that she had perceived. Namely, that the bedroom window had not been forced open, that it was not normal for a couple of doctors to leave their children alone and that Kate had reacted in an aggressive manner when she had approached her. She also alerted to the official statistics, that point towards the majority of these cases to involve a cover-up from the families.

Gonçalo Amaral’s book upsets the English

A delegation from the British justice left for London yesterday after having tried, in Portimão, to keep some details of the process under secrecy. The English, who according to what CM was able to establish, are upset about possible revelations that the book from the former coordinator of the PJ in Portimão may make, tried to request the instruction judge to maintain the secrecy on the forensics reports about the blood traces and cadaver odour that were collected from the apartment at the Ocean Club, but also other parts from the process. As far as CM was able to establish, the pretentions from the English delegation were denied, except in the case of the identity of persons that have condemnations or a police record of paedophilia which reside in the Algarve or were spending holidays in the region when the facts took place. The British that were in Portimão are policeman Stuart Prior, one of the senior liaison officers with the Portuguese police, a magistrate and a jurist from SOCA, the British agency that specializes in investigation organized crime. It is not known whether the trip was made under a rogatory letter or politically negotiated between the governments of both countries.

“In defense of my good name”

The book by Gonçalo Amaral is written in defense of his honour. “I felt the need to reinstate my good name, which was publicly rubbished while the institution that I belonged to for 26 years, the Polícia Judiciária, didn’t allow me to defend myself, or did so institutionally”, Gonçalo Amaral states in a text that justifies the book. In order to carry out that defense, he requested permission from the national directory but never obtained it. The book, which will be presented by Marques Vidal, a former director of the Judiciária, is launched on the 24th of this month, during a session that is scheduled for El Corte Inglés, in Lisbon.

On the Side

Laboratory Decisive test – The final report ended up being decisive for the foreseeable archiving of the process. In that document, which CM revealed, the possibility of DNA contamination was admitted.

Archived AG announced – The day after tomorrow, the AG will release a communication that will most likely announce the archiving of the process. The case will remain pending in Portimão’s Public Ministry, waiting for better evidence.

Reconstitution Stopped – The reconstitution of the evening of the disappearance was a diligence that was seen as essential in the process. It was stopped because some of the McCanns’ friends did not accept to return.

Wardrobe Odour detected – The English dogs signaled traces of Maddie’s death behind the sofa and in the bedroom wardrobe. On the bed, the animals didn’t detect anything.

Contamination Traces – The authorities have no doubts that the contamination of the location made the investigation more difficult. During the first few hours, tens of people entered the bedroom.

Removed By phone – Gonçalo Amaral was the target of various attacks and was removed by Alípio Ribeiro, by phone, after making a statement to a newspaper.

Letter Paedophile register – Yvone, in the letter that she sent to the English police, wanted the authorities to verify whether Dave had a register of paedophile activities.

*Notes: Janne Turner its a mistake obviously the name is Jane Tanner

There is an article today, on Público newspaper saying that the British Police does not want the names of several British paedophiles, who were investigated when Madeleine 'vanished', made public. And then this article in Correio da Manhã. Is it a coincidence? What do you think?

Once again: WHO'S AFRAID OF THE TRUTH?

English in Portimão to defend secrecy - Correio da Manhã

‘CM’ reveals – 15 of the 19 genetic markers found

English want secrecy

The McCanns want to hide the data from the Birmingham laboratory

One magistrate and two policemen, including Stuart Prior, responsible for the connection with the PJ, were at the Court in Portimão yesterday, trying to convince the Public Ministry prosecutor Magalhães e Menezes not to release the entire process of the disappearance of Madeleine from the judicial secrecy. One of the situations that the English want is that the preliminary report from the Birmingham lab, which mentions that “15 of the 19 genetic markers that were found in a residue that was collected from the couple’s car’s boot, are a match [with the missing child]” is not made public. Their pretention was denied.

Also the residues that were collected behind the sofa, according to the first report, “coincide with the corresponding components in the DNA profile of Madeleine McCann”, which led the Portuguese police and also the English liaison officer to fundament their suspicions that the child died between 5.30 p.m. and 10 p.m. at the Ocean Club, in Praia da Luz, and that the body was transported in the car that was rented by the parents 22 days later.

With the lifting of the judicial secrecy next week, some of those documents may be made public. CM knows that the fundaments of the preliminary report, allied to the elements that were collected by the investigation in the meantime, led the authorities onto the path of the parents as suspects of the child’s death. Kate and Gerry McCann later alleged that there were no indicia against them, but another report, signed by Mark Harrisom, the English policeman who was assigned to help the Portuguese authorities, also peremptorily stated that the little girl was dead. The English officer even admitted the possibility that the body of little Madeleine had been thrown into the sea, and equally defended the potentialities of the sniffer dogs, that are experts in detecting odours of cadaver and blood.

Details

Extracted from the hair. Madeleine McCann’s DNA was extracted from several residues that were collected at the apartment. Among them, hair that was found on the little girl’s brush and also saliva that was collected from the pillow.

19. In Portugal, the collection of 19 genetic markers is demanded for the determination of paternity. But in other countries, like the USA, only 12 are demanded.

15. On the residues that were collected from the rented car’s boot after the disappearance, 15 genetic markers that are identical to Madeleine were found.

Traces of a crime

Two dogs that are specially trained to assist in criminal investigation detected cadaver odour in the McCanns’ bedroom, in the living room, on Kate’s clothes, on the little girl’s soft toy and on the car key, as well as blood traces in the car boot and in the apartment’s living room.

Theoretical contamination possible

The second report from the English lab, which was sent after the child’s relatives were made arguidos, raises theoretical doubts that end up annulling the first conclusions.
The technicians say that if the residues that were collected are from one single source, then they belong to Madeleine. But if they were contaminated with DNA from Kate or Gerry (who present genetic resemblances because they are the biological parents), they may not belong to the child. Apart from that, according to the experts, the obtained results are so complex that they do not allow for an absolute reading.

British technique can be verified

The technique that was used by the English experts to verify the residues that were collected from the McCanns’ apartment and car is one of the most sophisticated in the world. It is used in that country and in the United States because it allows for the extraction of DNA profiles from very tenuous residues, by augmenting the amplification cycles. Due to the fact that it demands for very expensive material, and leads to results that are difficult to decode, this technique has not earned followers in Europe yet. In these reports, which were sent to the Polícia Judiciária months apart from each other, the authorities start by explaining the technique that is used, and state that they used a reference DNA sample from Madeleine McCann. That sample was obtained from “saliva stains that existed on the pillowcase”.
DNA from the rest of the family was also verified, because they contain similar genetic markers and to avoid any confusion with the results. Throughout the 22 pages of the report, which was signed by the same expert in both cases, it is frequent for the specialist in Microbiology and Biochemistry to admit that the complexity of the obtained data does not allow for a correct reading. Nevertheless, the laboratory has duplicated the residues, a fact that makes it possible for the same results to be contradicted by the Portuguese Forensic Medicine experts. According to what our newspaper was able to establish, some questions are still in the air and the foreseen archiving on Monday is certainly not going to clarify them. Namely the motive for the test results to have taken several months to be made known to the authorities, and having been altered in such a substantial manner. It should also be referred that separate tests were made afterwards, which originated other reports – they all continued to be inconclusive.

Gerry is the father

The possibility, which was advanced by a Portuguese newspaper, was never under investigation. Gerry is Maddie’s and the twins’ biological father, according to what the genetic profiles of the family members were able to confirm.

Murat Compensation – Murat is going to receive 757 thousand euros from British newspapers that recognized yesterday that they had published defamatory and false news about him.

Archiving Evidence – The archiving of the process, which is due to be announced on Monday, does not mean that the case is going to be buried. It may be reopened if new evidence appears.

McCanns Arguidos - If there is no final dispatch, Kate and Gerry remain as arguidos. Today, Robert Murat also maintains the same status.

Well if he does, they know where they can get lies from to put in their books, they need look no further than Vile and the vilettes and also for bizarrely insane theories, (because we know how Gonc loves those), they could look up the 3 A's.

He is going now because he has probably been told if he stays on and is found guilty of perverting the course of justice by withholding evidence of torture of a witness into a confession, he is going to the big house and he will lose his pension.

If they are found guilty they can put Cristovao and Amaral in the same cell and they can write lies together!

It tells us exactly that, but we have known for months that the Pj has no evidence.

What else it tells us is that Gonc is the kind of low life scum that would write a book about a missing child in order to make money out of it and have no reservations about it, neither about him doing his job so badly that he is responsible for allowing child abductors to get away with their crime!

How can he sleep at night?

As gonc is orf,I will bid him fair well, P**s off Gonc!

I came across a man today
he said his name was Gonc
he looked so very sad.
I said what is the matter Gonc
is it cos you've been so bad.

I have to leave my job real soon
I was hoping to go higher
but now I know this will not happen
cos I'm such a bloody liar.

I really tried to stitch em up
real good and proper
the only problem stopping that
I'm such a rotten copper.

I cannot eat, I cannot drink
I said I want to write a book
it will be full of lies
the only thing that's stopping me
is the price of bloody pies.

If I can leak a story just like I did before
if only to make ends meet
it pays so well and keeps me off the streets

By the way Gonc is meant to be bringing out a book, saying he will tell the truth.

Well if he knows the truth, why isn't he telling it now? He is a damned police officer, doesn't Portugal have a law about withholding evidence? Really serious offence in this country.

Gonc wouldn't know the truth if it jumped up and bit him on his wobbly backside! IMO he hasn't got a clue, he is another Walter Mitty clueless Keystone kop!

By the way Gonc how did Felicia Cabrita get hold of copies of witness statements and witness names, addresses and mobile and home telephone numbers?

No wonder witnesses are too scared to come forward in Portugal, they are worried they will be named and then they are open to threats and intimidation, what a disgrace!

I wonder how much Felicia Cabrita's paper SOL paid for all that information, must have been a fair price, how much do you reckon wonky Gonc?
I hear her husband is also your lawyer, wow that's brilliant, that should fill people with confidence in the Portuguese justice system - not!

Wasn't amarel the one who decided to have a glass or two of wine and a few ciggars during one of his lunch breaks whilst senselessly, carelessly, and unprofessionally chatting to people at a cafe about the case......saying how he believed the mccanns killed madeleine............

Yes, indeed he was Clairesy, but not only during one of his lunchbreaks, but during most, if not all of his lunchbreaks, which were many. Alcohol does have the ability to loosen tongues and it certainly seemed to work with Gonc., not that he needed an excuse to open that big mouth of his - it was just his way of making friends and influencing people

Hi Diane,

He spent time taking the PJ to task for their gross incompetence and Brad Garrett FBI former Special Agent and profiler, becomes another in the very long line of professionals, to publicly slate the Portuguese police and to agree that Madeleine was abducted. We are talking about people whose careers, actually involve working on high profile missing persons and missing children cases.
I have not heard of one professional that says that Madeleine died in that apartment by the hands of her parents.
If the McCann's are acting then they should be awarded an Oscar, every single month for life, for outstanding characterisation.

When this much maligned couple can see their files, is when the lid will really start to come off of this case.

The PJ have done nothing much but whinge about the British press, probably because they found they cannot control the British press like they can their own, by feeding them nonsense. I have to say if they think our press have been bad so far, oh dear, they haven't seen anything yet.

I also think that the British press will be very interested in the files of Robert Murat, especially those papers that he has said he is going to sue!

I found it very interesting the read what Garrett said about how,

"investigators would typically form a "command post right inside the resort. You start collecting information, and everything comes back to a lead detective in a room, and that's how you go through the information. You prioritize what needs to be done. ... You want to be right in the middle of the action so you can make snap decisions as to what should be done at any given time."

The Portuguese police/Goncalo Amaral decided to set a new trend in these investigations and set up a command post from his bed, so he could combine sleeping with doing his job!

This pig ignorant insensitive man went home and actually went to bed and slept soundly, while all hell was breaking loose in PDL, evidence being trampled on and ash dropped on it and lost forever. But more than this he left a couple who were absolutely distraught and panic stricken, unable to speak the language, foreigners on holiday in a strange country, he left them to wander the resort crying and pitifully calling out for their daughter.

I actually find this hard to think about without getting upset and it doesn't wear off, this feeling gets worse and my anger towards this fat pig of man increases each time I think of it.
This actually makes me go cold and shudder, how on earth can a man who apparently has to have a degree to do his, fall so badly short of the plate? How could he do this as a human being, let alone a detective whose job it was to find Madeleine.

I have great difficulty believing that a human being detective would have done this, this one fact alone, is the fact that started me thinking that all is not as it seems in PDL - Portugal.

Some people in Praia da Luz knew something that night, who are they? Does Goncalo Amaral know who they are? Does someone within the PJ actually know what happened to Madeleine?

This is what we will discover over the coming months, I firmly believe this. Whoever it was that tried to keep these files secret has just lost their first battle and it is downhill all the way for them from now on.

The papers will not be interested in the theories and the all the garbage the PJ have been feeding them over the past 14 months, they have done that already, there is no news in it anymore (if there ever was) the real story now will be the incompetence and the bungling of the PJ and all the missed leads and ignored witness information.

I feel that we will discover where Madeleine is.

I also feel that at last the question will be asked, why?

Why exactly did this astonishing inept police force, make bungle after bungle, after bungle?

What was the reason for this? This I feel is where the McCann's investigators will start and this is what the newspapers will ask.

Whoever it was that did what they did in PDL that night, I believe they still live there, they may as well admit it now, because I firmly believe their time is up and I hope it is burning in their sick depraved minds!

Hang on Madeleine, hang on baby, not long now.

xxx God Bless Madeleine xxx

How convenient to be arrested for a drug offence?

Who arrested him do you know? apparently one of the officers due to appear in court charged with concealing evidence about the alleged torture and confession of Leonor Cipriano, is no other than Goncalo Amaral and Goncalo Amaral was or may be still is part of the drug squad in Portugal.

It was also muted that Portuguese police were gunning all out to get a conviction in the McCann case because they knew they were going to lose the Leonor Cipriano case.

Now of course they know that it is very unlikely that they are going to win either of these cases, looks like they are gunning for Grade who is probably a soft target and because of his connections to the 6 police officers who are due to stand trial very soon.

Among them Goncalo Amaral and Paulo Cristovao.

It seems highly suspect to me!

Robert Murat - The poisonous spider caught in his own web
2 more credible witnesses have come forward to say that they saw Robert Murat on the night Madeline was abducted, this puts the number of independent witnesses who say they saw him on the night in question to 8.

How can he escape justice now and why has he and his mother not been interrogated yet to find out why he lied to Portuguese police about his movements?

He has placed his elderly mother in the position of 'perverting the course of justice', which is a charge punishable by a lengthy prison term of which Mother Murat would never see the light of day again if charged.

Is it about time Robert Murat told the truth for the sake of his mother?

If not lock her up and throw away the key so that justice will be served on those who are complicit in the abduction of an innocent little 4 year old girl whilst she slept innocently in her bed.

Nothing more abhorrent.

I watched the sky news documentary on this case and a local witness stated that there was no way Robert Murat was in the area on the night in question because all of the locals were searching and never saw him, and that it was only 3 people who did see him, accusing 3 of the Tapas 9 of lying, this adds another 5 independent witnesses to the Tapas 3.

How stupid is the local woman who supported Robert Murat on the Sky news documentary, how will she feel for the rest of her life when she supported this man on camera? She stated that many locals were out searching the night Madeline was abducted and none of them saw him, were all of the locals looking for Madeline at or outside her apartment all night or were they looking in the local community no where near the apartment?

Robert Murat was not standing outside the complex all night with a sign around his neck, he was there and gone during the course of the evening hoping no one would see him.

I doubt any local who knew Murat spent any time near the complex that night, Robert Murat was not out in the local town searching, he was seen loitering around the vicinity of the complex, were none of the locals went, so it is quite obvious that no locals saw him on the night in question, the ones to see him were those on holiday in the complex and those who worked in the complex.

Helped support the Sky new documentary makers theory of the parents guilt though for the world to watch dont you think - Those terrible lying Tapas 3, lying for the parents to cover up their crime

Trial by media and Sky news' guilt.

The Sky news documentary was another poor piece of journalism that inadvertently laid blame at the parents feet again, those who made it believe the parents are guilty so used this documentary to state that fact and then showed it to the world - Using this case for their own ends

I hope that once this is ended if there are any grounds for the McCann family to su that they will, for the sake of their daughter.

We await the next bit of news stating that Robert Murat has been arrested.

If you ask my opinion, the ex husband of Murat's girlfriend is the one to crack out of that group.

do you think Robert Murat - Running scared ?

Calcite

yes this is one and the same Paulo Cristovao, the one that wrote the "Star of Joana" AND the "Star of Madeleine".

Apparently he is not bothered if the McCann's sue him for libel, well he should be because from what I can see, they have a cast iron case!

Perhaps he knows he is going to prison and is just saying in for a penny in for as many filthy tainted euros as he can get to line his own filthy nest before he is curtailed?
He could write from prison about his experiences at the hands (and feet) of all those prisoners that are there and should not be! Who knows, perhaps he has helped put a few in there.

I hear that Leonor Cipriano was in the prison that her lawyer was accused of trying to smuggle drugs into!

Did you know that Goncalo Amaral was back on the drug squad? and did you know that Goncalo Amaral is also due to be up in the dock accused of concealing the brutal torture of Leonor Cipriano?

yet another road leading to Goncalo Amaral.

Not looking very good for the PJ is it?

Madeleine appears on the official PJ Webster for missing children

This man Paulo Cristovao, was definitely head of missing children and he worked on the Joana Cipriano case, but not the Madeleine one, he left to become a sleazy editor of a sleazy newspaper and could be the link to sources that leak in the PJ!

How did this man get the info he used to write his odious sleazy book?

I hope the money he earned on the back of an innocent missing child chokes the bastard and causes him as much grief as he has caused the parents of *abducted* Madeleine McCann.

In my mind and in my opinion the fact that he has profited out of two missing children makes him no better than a low life scum bag pimp.

Now, to all those of you wondering, yes, the disclaimer above and the following posts come from the same place I, for obvious reasons, call the House of Filth. The posts I copy pasted here are just a small part of a bigger collection. It's kind of ironic that the authors of those posts are experts in throwing libel threats to all those who dare to even suggest the McCanns are nothing but wonderful parents. I also find it interesting the silence regarding Murat's victory against the British press. Clarence Mitchell did not wish to comment (I can certainly understand why). It seems his wishes were respected. Coincidencies, I'm sure...
