Detective set to publish McCann book in Britain

Portuguese officer who led the search for Madeleine says his account defends the honour of his team

By Thais Portilho-Shrimpton
Sunday, 16 November 2008

A controversial best-selling account of the hunt for Madeleine McCann by the Portuguese detective who led the investigation is expected to be published in the UK soon, according to its author.

Speaking exclusively to The Independent on Sunday, Goncalo Amaral denied cashing in on the tragic disappearance of the three-year-old but said he was determined to restore his reputation, which "had been torn to shreds" by unfair and inaccurate media reports.

The book, Maddie: The Truth about the Lie, has already sold an estimated 180,000 copies in Europe, and Mr Amaral's representatives are trying find a British publisher. The McCanns said last night that they would scrutinise any British publication with a view to possible legal action.

Madeleine went missing on 3 May 2007, days before her fourth birthday, from a holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz as her parents dined at a nearby restaurant. In the Portuguese edition of his book, Mr Amaral says he believes she died in a "tragic accident" in the Mark Warner holiday flat where she was left to sleep the night she disappeared.

Mr Amaral was removed from the investigation in October 2007 after criticising British police officers. Nine months later the Portuguese authorities closed the investigation and lifted the arguido [suspect] label from Madeleine's parents.

The book's publisher, Mario Sena Lopes, said there was now an English version of Mr Amaral's book and he was negotiating a UK deal. He said several publishers were interested and he was confident the British public would soon be able to read the book.

Mr Amaral said: "I received numerous messages of support and solidarity since being taken off the case, including from the UK – messages that also motivated me to tell people what I knew about the Maddie case. I am positive that there's also a section of the public eager to know the truth.

"People can form their opinion without the manipulation that we have seen before."

He said his only regret was failing to carry out a reconstruction of the events soon after Madeleine vanished but claims he was put under "serious pressure" not to. He insisted this was the only failure in a "perfect" text-book investigation.

Asked whether he thought Madeleine was dead, he said: "It is not just my opinion. A whole team of Portuguese and British investigators came to that conclusion last year, and this is part of the files. I have never said the couple killed their daughter and this is not my belief. Deaths may happen for natural reasons, accident or intervention by a third party."

He said he was unperturbed by the threat of any legal action from the McCann family. "There is no reason for that. The details exposed in the book are facts, happenings and objective data which figure in the process and not lies, as they have been described in the press."

He denied he was profiting from the tragic case. "The biggest thing I achieved with this book was to defend my honour and that of those who worked with me. The way I see it, you cannot put a price on dignity. The other objective of the book is to contribute to the search for the truth."

Mr Amaral added that he is now considering legal action against a number of British media outlets. The "excessive" publicity the case attracted was a "double-edged sword: on one hand it makes the disappearance known, but on the other hand it puts the life of the missing person in jeopardy," he insisted. "I demanded from my superiors, they stand up for the investigators faced with attacks by the media, but that never happened. This was one of the reasons that led me later on to hand in my resignation so I could regain my freedom of speech and write the book."

Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCanns, said last night: "Lawyers for Kate and Gerry have been aware of what Mr Amaral has been alleging for some time. What he has said and written before now is grossly defamatory of them.

"If he chooses to publish them in Britain those words will be studied intensely carefully and they will not hesitate to act if they are defamatory."

Hey, Clarrie, which one is it? Are they defamatory or not? And are they defamatory only if they are in English? The book has been out in Portugal since July. Haven't you had the time to ask the two Portuguese lawyers if they thought the book was defamatory or not? And by the way, what the hell does 'studied intensely carefully' mean? English is not my native language..

I hope this means we will soon see the book in the shops in England.

So do I, JJ. So do I.

Hi Cláudia,

Clarrie really should proof read his speeches before he reads them out. His grammar is worse than mine!

Aside from that this is really good news.

Hi, Helmy! Yeah, his grammar is not that good. I would rather put a bullet to my brain than do his job.
Great news indeed. :-)

Ola Claudia, Spookiesman Mitchell seem upset again. Oh-oh... book out long time in Portuguese... his clients not sue why? They seem not to know that Portuguese is 6th most spoken language in world with between 177 and 191 million native speakers. Also, others that speak Portuguese as 2nd or 3rd language and how similar it is to Spanish, so many Spanish speakers also understand. Book also already in Spanish, which is spoken by between 322 and 400 million, and is 2nd or 3rd most spoken language. Also, again, many others speak Spanish as 2nd or 3rd language. And Book is set to be publish in more languages.
Mitchell need to be told this. He need to be told that THE TRUTH OF THE LIE is already out. He thinks if not publish in UK, world and English not be told different from what he wants them to learn. Funny that. Shows how arrogant he is, thinking that in Portuguese it insignificant. Ha!
So is interest in not informing people of "defamatory" information or is it to keep damage limited to rest of world and outside UK? If lies being told in Timor about me, I not care I never go to Timor, I not want them say especially if about my involvement in my baby disappearance! Why they not care? Why only threats if book in English? I suspect only for PURPOSE OF REPUTATION. Again that disgust me.
Also I think it shows that they have no power outside UK. Publishers in other countries not scared of Spookiesman and threats. They not sue and they swallon frogs because they not want, I believe, to go to court.
It also show that Mitchell has what I believe is island mentality. He thinks if not published on island it not fact. Oh ho, how wrong, Spookiesman, how wrong...how many frogs you still have for swallow. Ribbit, ribbit!

What's happened to Justice for Maddie and the twins blog? It says it doesn't exist.... ?

Great news about Goncalo's book!! Woohoo! Can't wait.

Olá, Niza!
Great to read you.
You always make me laugh. what you say is always right and put in such a funny way that it is irresistable!
Beijos!

Cláudia said...

Hi, Jill!
I've just been there and it was ok. The blog was there.
I hope a UK publisher has the balls to stand up to the Team.
Good to read you here.

Hi Claudia,

I hope they have the guts to publish the book in the UK, The Independent is , I believe, the first UK-newspaper to have interviewd Mr. Amaral. A bit late but it's a start!

And this statement from him is so very true: "People can form their opinion without the manipulation that we have seen before."

Best regards,
Liz. :)(from Holland)

Cláudia said...

Hi, Liz from Holland! :-)

I also hope it gets published in the UK and soon.
As far as I know (I read it somewhere) there were several newspapers who interviewed Mr Amaral after the book was published here. Apparently the interviews were never published. We can only guess why.
Good to hear from you!

Hi Cláudia

The link works from your blog - I think she'd just deleted a post and it's actually the page that doesn't exist rather then the blog - phew! I always go into panic mode when things suddenly disappear.

(unlike the McCanns who just take disappearances in their stride and can laugh it off) ;)

Fab news day today!!

Well, it is for us - perhaps not so for the McCanns.

Get em Goncalo!!

And bestest wishes to Goncalo and Sofia and their children if he ever takes a peek on this blog to read his fan mail. Keep fighting them Goncalo!

Best wishes to you too Cláudia and all your friends who post here. xx

Cláudia said...

Oh, I know what happened! LOL That was actually my fault. I posted this article on Viv's by mistake. As I'm a member of Viv's both blogs appear on my dashboard. I thought I was on my own blog but I was on hers. As soon as I published the article I noticed it, copy pasted the thing and deleted it. Oooops, sorry for the scare! :-)
I can guarantee you that Mr Amaral is aware of this blog. And also of other places which support him.
xxxx

Jill Havern said...

Ah ha, that would explain it then!

I dunno, you just can't get the staff these days... :)

Very pleased to hear that Sn Amaral knows about his support.

Orchids and roses for Sofia.

(I loved that story from Sn Amaral, it was so sweet)

Cláudia said...

:-) Guilty as charged! :-)

He certainly knows.
They are good people.

Hiya Claudia darling

what a plonker that Pink Spinster is - in Portuguese they ARE grossly defamtory but if written in English it is only a maybe, an empty threat, not a declaration of intent. He continues to cause further immense harm to the public persona of the gruesome twosome with his silly and ill considered outbursts. He seems to believe that by merely stating lawyers for the gruesome twosome will be intensely scrutinising (i put it a little better for him and hope he learns) he will instil terror into the hearts of all of us who continue 18 months on, to speak our mind. When is he going to realise he is not a lawyer, he instils no terror and his clients cannot be libelled by simply stating the truth, they are responsible for the death and disposal of their own little girl. As they stated themselves, they went out a family of five and came back a family of four. This simply could not have happened to a normal family with devoted caring parents, that is the simple truth!

Love Viv xxxxx

Cláudia said...

Anon, I'm sorry for replying in Englsih but my Spanish is shameful. :-)
Yes, we know. In fact, Mr Amaral just returned from your beautiful country. He has been going there, promoting the book and participating in conferences. It makes perfect sense because of the proximity and the things our countries have in common.
Thank you for your comment.

viv said...

Oh BTW Claudia please send my love and best wishes to Goncalo for spreading the word of truth to the UK and providing us all with a really good read for Christmas.

If it makes the gruesome twosome uncomfortable, they have sought to extend the same privilege to him!

xx

Cláudia said...

Hi, darling! :-)
It's great to have you back.
The pink one can keep on believing that he scares people just by opening his mouth and saying silly things. But he knows damn well that Mr Amaral doesn't give a flying one about what he says. Mr Amaral laughs at the things he says and at the empty threats he throws his way. I still remember back in July the 'swift legal action' when the book came out. Mr Amaral almost invited a lawsuit and even so, nothing. I hope there is a publisher with balls which dares to publish the book in the UK in time for Christmas. It would be a great gift. And of course, it would make the lawyers' job easier.
Mr Amaral is perfectly aware of the support of many of your countrymen and countrywomen, dear Viv.

"People can form their opinion without the manipulation that we have seen before."

Thank you Sr Amaral.

'Mr Amaral added that he is now considering legal action against a number of British media outlets.'

Hopefully the above comment from the article will be enough to stop UK Press/Media from spouting the usual McC-Pinksquit language (ie: disgraced cop and much worse) when reporting on the book when it goes on sale in the UK.

//Clarence Mitchell, a spokesman for the McCanns, said last night: "Lawyers for Kate and Gerry have been aware of what Mr Amaral has been alleging for some time. What he has said and written before now is grossly defamatory of them.

"If he chooses to publish them in Britain those words will be studied intensely carefully and they will not hesitate to act if they are defamatory."//

The above words make the person who uttered them look like an ignorant and undereducated pinkpopping buffoon, IMO! I PMSL everytime I read it!

Cláudia said...

Anon, thanks. Very interesting.

Cláudia said...

Hi, Zodiac.
Yes, listening to the pink one makes any normal person want to ROTFL.
That is the great goal. Let Mr Amaral's version be known to the world. Then people can make up their minds. But they have to be able to access all versions of the story.
Great to read you here, Zodiac.

Speaking to The Independent and announcing that he's trying to get an editor to publish is book may be OK as a way to promote it.

However, taking into consideration the power of Clarence Mitchel and his friends, publishing this book in the UK may prove quite difficult, maybe impossible.

Still, Gonçalo Amaral may have his book translated to English, have it published in Portugal and... sell it over the internet.

Just a thought.

Cláudia said...

Hi, Péricles.
I agree with you to a certain extent. It may be difficult or even impossible. But by making it a public wish/intention, it will also be very, very interesting to assess the kind of 'movements' this intention may or may not create. If no publisher comes forward, then we will be certain about what some of us only suspect... And you never know. Maybe a small publisher with little or nothing to lose will be the one to stand up against 'it'.

Niza said...

Hello Claudia. I do my part. Today I send 5 copies of THE BOOK for friends of me in UK. IN turn they promise they tell everyone they know what THE BOOK say. If not combat Pink Spookiesman with Published book, we do worse. We combat word of mouth. And Spookiesman should know this base rule of marketing: People tell 1 person something good they know. They tell 10 something bad/complain.
Might be slower journey, but truth will be known soon or later. Ribbit, Ribbit, Spookiesman.

Very well, done, Niza.
Hopefully, soon all interested UK citizens will be able to acquire one copy in their favourite bookshop.
I don't think Mr Pink likes you, Niza. :-)
By the way, can you guess what I'm going to give as Christmas presents (the ones who still don't have it?) :-)

Boa noite, minha linda!

Bjos

Paula

Cláudia said...
