Political pressure: spin that!

Kate McCann Forced Political Pressure on the Investigation

Revelations –Maddie’s mother’s notes prove Gonçalo Amaral right

Kate McCann forces political pressure

The English prime minister called the couple directly and the British diplomacy took care of the travelling

“To increase the political pressure”. The phrase, by Kate McCann, written among the notes that were found in her house and which the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) had apprehended, is clear about the manner in which Maddie’s parents intended to manage their daughter’s disappearance, bringing it into the press’ first pages and turning it into a case with political outlines.

On the morning of the 23rd of May 2007 (twenty days after Maddie’s disappearance), before they left for the Sanctuary of Fátima, Kate and Gerry left Gordon Brown a message. Maddie’s mother describes it as a form of “raising the political pressure” and reveals that the present prime-minister – at that date, he was not in functions but had already been confirmed as Tony Blair’s successor – answered her only three hours later. He spoke with Gerry, was “very sympathetic and gave strength”, tells Kate, who describes the visit to the catholic sanctuary as overwhelming, potent and emotional.

On the same day in the afternoon, Gordon Brown called Maddie’s parents again. Kate’s notebooks do not report the conversation but one is able to understand that the purpose was to create political pressure, forcing the PJ to act swiftly.

Today, at more than a year’s distance from the child’s disappearance and after the case has been archived, Kate’s notes expose the pressures that were reported by the former coordinator of the case, Gonçalo Amaral, who from the moment when he was removed from the investigation, realized that the process would not produce an accusation.

With an investigation that was initially inclined towards the abduction theory, partly forced by the McCanns, the evidence of the pressures by the couple also explains the British press’ posture in the coverage of the case, mainly from the moment when Madeleine’s parents went from victims to suspects and arguidos. With the British prime minister himself supporting the McCanns, through direct and frequent phone calls that are revealed by Kate, it became almost impossible for the English government to help an investigation that had indicated the parents as guilty.

Apart from the contacts with Gordon Brown, Kate’s notebooks reveal other important allies. From the hiring of Clarence Mitchell, who at that point in time worked for the government, as an assistant, until the conversations with the wife of Tony Blair, the former British prime minister.

Mitchell actually had a pivotal role in the propaganda machine that was built by the McCanns within a few days, and which counted on the great help from the British diplomacy in all the trips that were carried out by Kate and Gerry.

The first and most media-exposed [trip] – to Rome, to be received by Pope Benedict XVI – was suggested by the assistant, on the 27th of May, after speaking to Francis Campbell, the British ambassador at the Vatican. “Rome is already preparing itself”, Kate wrote, anticipating that visit as what would become the “main” news on that day. One day later, the visit and the audience with the Pope were already confirmed, with a program that was prepared in a detailed manner.

On the 30th of May, after leaving the British consulate in Rome, Kate and Gerry, accompanied by the ambassador, made a strategic stop “for the photographers to catch an image looking at the Basilica”, and continued towards the Vatican, where they spent a few minutes with Benedict XVI. A moment that was described as very emotional, positive and important, and that summoned “loads of” journalists and photographers, which is definitely a concern that is always present with the couple.

After Rome, Madrid, Berlin and Morocco followed, trips with the purpose of publicizing Madeleine’s face and which always relied on passages through consulates or receptions by British ambassadors and political representatives of the corresponding countries.

According to Kate’s notes, the days started or ended with meetings, phone calls and emails. Cherie Blair, the wife of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown’s predecessor, was one of Kate’s contacts, as demonstrated by the reports of the 17th of July. Before Kate gives Sky News an interview, she speaks with Cherie, who agrees to make a 20 second videoclip about Maddie for the English channel. On that same day, Blair himself pledges assistance and makes himself available for whatever is needed.

Kate’s notes:

Left a message for Gordon Brown to call us in order to increase the political pressure” – Kate McCann, 23rd of May

“Gordon Brown called and spoke with Gerry – very sympathetic and gave strength. Somewhat emotive feeling afterwards” – Kate McCann, 23rd of May

“Clarence spoke to us about a possible visit to the Vatican. Rome is already preparing itself. Francis Campbell was spoken to” – Kate McCann, 27th of May

The ambassador’s solidarity

On the 4th [of May], only hours after the alert of Madeleine’s disappearance was given, Kate wrote in her notes that the English ambassador, John Buck, had been in the apartment offering them his solidarity. She also noted the presence of two employees from the consulate and stressed the strong presence of the media on location. “There is news appearing in the United Kingdom”, Maddie’s mother remembered, also noting the “worrying” and “boring” presence of Yvone, the English social security technician who tried to understand whether there was anything in the family’s life that might explain the child’s absence.

It should be referred that on that very same day, the ambassador met with senior officials from the PJ to understand the outlines of the case.

The news

Abduction theory – On the first days after Maddie’s disappearance, on the 3rd of May 2007, the abduction theory was the only one that was mentioned in the news. “Give back our Madeleine”, the parents appealed, not admitting any other possibility.

Visit to Fátima – Twenty days after Maddie’s disappearance, the McCann couple went to pray at the Sanctuary of Fátima. But before that, they called Gordon Brown in order to increase the political pressure.

Brown’s pressure – Only five days after the McCanns’ contact with the British prime minister, Gordon Brown’s pressures on Portugal because of the Maddie case were already known.

McCanns at the Vatican - The trip to the Vatican and the audience with Pope Benedict XVI were suggested by advisor Clarence Mitchell, who mobilized the British diplomacy in order to take the McCanns to Rome.

“Former PJ director pulls the rug from under his successor’s feet”

The former President of the Republic, Jorge Sampaio, said to SIC yesterday that it is truly unheard of, from the point of view of institutions and of the prestige that we must defend before foreign countries, that the former director of the PJ, a joint prosecutor [Alípio Ribeiro], came out to criticize the archiving [of the process of the disappearance of Maddie] when it was him who managed that process, and I also presume that the constitution of arguidos [of Kate and Gerry McCann] was not entirely unknown to him. I think this is an amazing thing in terms of pulling the rug from under the feet of colleagues that succeeded him in his post. There is no democracy that justifies this”, according to Sampaio.

Concerning Gonçalo Amaral, the former President considers that “if he has factual data that is important for the reopening of this instruction, then he should present them”.

Book Complaint advances – The McCanns say that a lawsuit for defamation against Gonçalo Amaral is “likely”, because of the book, but also against Portuguese newspapers for reproducing its contents.

Amaral Everything in the process – The McCanns’ spokesman says that “from the Attorney General’s statements, they are innocent before the law”, but Amaral recalls that his statements are in the process.

Portimão Presentation – Gonçalo Amaral launches his book in Portimão today. The session is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Municipal Museum. Porto and Braga are his next destinations.

Book Reserve your copy – “The Truth of the Lie”, Gonçalo Amaral’s book, will be distributed again next week, on a date that is yet to be scheduled by CM. Reserve a copy at your kiosk.

Malinka Receives 250 thousand euros – Apart from Robert Murat, also the Russian Sergey Malinka and his [Murat's] girlfriend at that time, Michaela Walczuch, will receive approximately 250 thousand euros in compensations from the British press.

Tomorrow – The management of news in the British press

Clarence Mitchell: The Drama Shark

Clarence Mitchell by Eduardo Dâmaso, Deputy Chief Editor of Correio da Manhã

The McCann Family Spokesman is a shark used to the meanders of the English Politics. He knows how to use the words and chooses the moments for drama - like that hilarious moment where he allowed himself to be filmed in a supposed phone call with the couple* - and others, when the communication is serious.

Yesterday, between the drama and the seriousness he threatened the newspapers who reproduce the Book by Gonçalo Amaral with processes for slander. 'Either they are very brave or completely stupid' said Mitchell. It's not one thing or the other. In Portugal - we believe ... that we still have the freedom of expression, and, without offending anyone, we still can write and say different things from what is told by the McCanns or by Mr. Mitchell. We can still write about the doubts that an investigation raises. We can still say, I believe, that an archiving is a long way of being considered a declaration of innocence. Mr. Mitchell would like to create a 'wall of silence' over this issue but honestly that will be impossible for him to achieve. Mr. Mitchell is in fact someone who owes something to the silence. At least, that is what his status of witness, advises to - but, in that matter, the Portuguese authorities are much more generous, mainly when they are british subjects.

1 - Why all this need for POLITICAL pressure from so very early on? I can even understand (wether I agree or not) the wish to raise public awareness. But what the hell have politics got to do with his? If this was an abduction, like Kate and Gerry McCanns want us all to believe, where do politics fit in? Was Madeleine abducted by FARC?

2 - Do all British citizens abroad have immediate phone contact with the Prime Minister? Do diplomatic channels work like this with all British citizens abroad? Does the Ambassador personally visit all British citizens abroad in need? Do all British citizens abroad have the support of a former prime Minister and his wife as well as a spokesperson who used to work for the Government?

3 - As for Mr Eduardo Dâmaso's comments, is he the only one who tries to explain to Mr Mitchell that in Portugal we live in a democracy, we have freedom of expression and that we don't need him to tell us what to think, what to say, what to read and what to discuss? Isn't it time that our spineless politicians get a backbone and take a stand? Don't wait for the Portuguese people to do it. Because if that happens, you'll regret it. The Portuguese are getting fed up and enough is enough. I hope someone from the government is reading the common citizen's comments in our online newspapers and magazines. They are very revealing, in my opinion.

Hi Claudia hope you are well; Well it seems that those who pointed out a conspiracy early on in these proceedings may be yet proved right; but even ordinary people like me can see that there is something very wrong and biased about our media. Its hard to believe just how much pressure seems to have been placed on those only trying to serve justice. How can we have law and order without it and who will protect the vulnerable? Thank goodness for Dr Amaral and the other good men and women who have given everything to try to discover the truth. Madeleine's death may have been tragic but I hope that instead of setting child welfare back fifty years as Mr Mitchell would like that instead the future is better because of such dedicated men and women.

Claudia in point 2, you ask "Do all British citizens abroad have immediate phone contact with the Prime Minister? Do diplomatic channels work like this with all British citizens abroad? Does the Ambassador personally visit all British citizens abroad in need? Do all British citizens abroad have the support of a former prime Minister and his wife as well as a spokesperson who used to work for the Government?"

Answer is No, Claudia. But most British citizens not part of Committee on Medical Aspects of Radiation in the Environment.

British people know better than me, but not Brown government interested in Nuclear Energy? Not Brown brother involved in Nuclear Energy?

What people in UK think if someone part of committee that says if it ok or not to live near reactors (cause cancer or not?) leave his own babies alone to go eat and drink with friends?
You trust his judgment? I not trust. Could this be the reason papers not talk about this? And why Ambassador there very early on 4 May? Damage control?

Hi Plainwaters

I always wondered what had become of you.

I didn't know that you had had a name transplant.

I also wonder what politics had to do with it.

I remember John McCann saying, very early on "This is a political issue that needs wider exposure."

At the time I thought "WTF"?

The only reason it could have been policital then was if Maddie was kidnapped or assassinated by someone in government, surely?

Yes, it's political now, but only because the McScumbags have made it that way.

Cláudia said...

Niza, I don't know if that has ever been confirmed. But something must explain the political aspect of this case. This should always have been a police matter. Maybe if it had been only a police matter, things would have gone differently.

ICTOAN, Plainwaters sometimes stops by and says Hi. :-)

go get 'em goncalo,

if the reports in Correio da Manhã are true, and I have no reason to believe they would be stupid enough to lie at this point, it's interesting that it's Kate's notes which confirm what has always been thought to be a rumour from ?cold hearted, unbalanced, mentally disturbed antis'...

Niza said...

Claudia,

You don't know if what confirmed?

Cláudia said...

Niza, the McCanns, the nuclear thing and the possible political aspirations.

Claudia,

Thanks for this new thread, I am off to read it and read it again.

With regard to GA's book. I wonder if the publisher he has at present intends to print versions in other languages. I would not trust buying a copy unless it is endorsed by GA and bought online from PT (or wherever he has it published) then sent from there. Given all the spinning cr@p we are subjected to here in the UK, I only want an authentic copy. There is no Law I believe that stops me buying a book online and reading it. Is there? Now are there any Laws that cover a PR spokesperson saying Archiving is Innocence?

Niza said...

We in Portugal need remember that UK country where parliament member with affair if found out must resign and it big scandal. Imagine scandal if someone with important function connect to health of people and environment show not good sense and leave babies alone to go eat and drink? This why that be play down and need for spokesman to try make people forget and make Mccanns victims?
I think this legitimate questions.

Oh, now McCanns sue me and take my 200 euros from bank (I already spent 50 on dress - ha ha)

Lengthy forum debates by reputable commentators included reported comments by a Mark Warner employee that the presence of a certain British VIP in Luz on 3 May, associated with the Tapas group, would 'blow peoples' minds'.

It's plausible given the extent of political interference and Mitchell's secondment from the Home Office.

Kate's 'notes' do not explain why the call from Gerry to Kate in Goncala's book was deleted from his phone records. How odd for a highly traumatized mother who had lost a vulnerable child to have the presence of mind, so soon afterwards, to keep a carefully written record of the content calls made to 'certain'people.

Whilst British Police were allowed to seize and publish Kate's 'notes', acquisition of cuddle cat and Gerry's computer, reportedly long awaited by PJ for forensic examination in Portugal, were not similarly seized.

The British press confirmed no paedophillia material was found by PJ on Robert Murat's computer; his was seized at the outset. Do you think cuddle cat and Gerry's computer still exist or that they've been conveniently 'removed' ?

Anonymous said...

claudia,

Do you remember the lengthy forum debates on the VIP with the group on 3 May (took swift leave)? It was reported by several OPs that a Mark Warner employee said the person's ID would 'blow peoples' minds'.

niza,

Any comment from Social Services in Britain will be Mitchell 'spin', designed by McCann mechanics.

Employees face immediate dismissal for breaking legal undertakings applicable to confidentiality.

Anonymous said...

claudia,

I applaud Goncala for upholding his rights and publishing facts. His honour and dignity is well supported in Britain; how wise of him not to succumb to the British media for mega bucks. Gross misrepresentation is the aim as shown in today's Mail.

Mitchell's spin machine is in fifth gear !!! The police perspective is publicly available. The patience urged by PJ throughout the protracted political hindrances and distortions, have been well rewarded by the thousands of PJ supporters in Britain.

It's been welcomed with open arms in US & Australia - congratulations Goncala - ongoing respect for God's gift of Eddie & Keela's remarkable abilities and worth. Sadly, their latest 'find' reported in DE are the 'milk teeth' of children who died in the Jersey Home. Abandoned and betrayed ... truly evil.

Cláudia said...

Anon,

I have to say that as I'm not much of a conspiracy theorists I never really believed that 10th Tapas thing although it could be possible and it may explain other things.

Other anon, Mr Gonçalo Amaral is aware that many people, apart from Portuguese people, support him. He received hundreds if not thousands of e-mails, while he was still in the PJ, saying it.
As for the rest, I agree with you. Parents may lie, friends may lie, witnesses may lie, arguidos may lie, police officers may lie, prime Ministers may lie but dogs do not lie.

I see today in Correio da Manha they say Kate walks with Gerry organized for media. They find notes written by Kate with time of walks accorded with media. This why we see on tv in Portugal they walk and hold hands and when turn corner and think no press see, they let go hands. No more need support from each other? I think they evil minds. Nasty people try to make us shut up because they try now to get world to forget.

Niza said...

I suspect there spokesman must have bad grades in school in history class. If he not, he know that try forbid people to talk will result like France in WWII - French resistance which suffer much but in end won! Not good to try to oppress people freedom, much much resistance and raise suspicion of those not sure. Good move for truth, bad move for spining.

Cláudia said...

Zodiac, maybe they will gather the troops and invade the USA with Clarrie commanding the army! LOL

Niza, what is now being reported in Correio da Manhã, that the hand in hand morning walks were prearranged with the media, was already known by all those prsent in Praia da Luz, but treated as nasty rumour by nasty antis.

Cláudia said...

Niza, Clarriiee and the rest of the team must have forgotten of what length some people went to have their say. And don't forget, the media where the freedom of expressionexists is always an ally.

Niza said...

Claudia, I very shocked. I not believe this possible of any mother! British mommys like Portuguese mommys - they love their babies! They not have head to arrange walks with media, they busy cry and look for baby girl, looking in holes, knocking doors, screaming out name in woods and beach, ask people everywhere if see daughter.

Niza said...

I like Moita Flores opinion on book and case. He great man!

Cláudia said...

Niza, that cultural difference excuse was always a pile of crap from Clarriiee. Mothers are mothers anywhere in this world. Portuguese mothers don't love their children more than British mothers. They don't cry more and they don't suffer more when they lose a child. Normal mothers love their children and never leave them alone. That's a fact and there's no way to spin it.

Claudia,

The walking like Royals and holding hands whilst doing so is a sharp contrast to their start in PT. The bus video where he is sitting apart from his wife and kids looking like he could not be bothered. Also saying F off in front of his own children ( I always think when I hear parents publicly swear in front of their children, what do they hear at home), other children in the party and also other children not in the holiday party on that bus. If I had seen that lot I would have thought FFS, as I looked down my nose at them. Also we have seen lots and lots of smiley happy family pics since their child disappeared, pity the bus trip did not depict them as this happy smiley family looking forward to the holiday ahead. I have always been surprised by that video being made public.

I see this on Joana Morais' site, translation from Correio da Manhã:

"In the same notes, Kate expresses distress about the Portuguese and the German journalists. On the 11th of June, in Morocco, after Kate made a positive evaluation of the trip because there were so many photographers present, the doctor remembers “noticing” Portuguese journalists. “We didn’t want to give them a story”, decided the McCanns, who classify the questions from the Portuguese as “sleazy and unexpected”, even after preparation meetings that last “four hours”: “I was very angry at a journalist today. I told her not to do so much detective work.”

Concerning the editor of the ‘Sun’ newspaper, on the 11th of July Kate was assured that there would be no “adverse publicity”: “She was really nice. Perfect solution”, Maddie’s mother noted."

If miss sleazy-lady find Portuguese and German Journalist's questions "sleazy and unexpected" that big Honour for journalists.

And why she not want jornalist to do detective work? Maybe in detective work journalist find HER baby. Or she no not possible?

Kate not like "adversed publicity"? No one like, but Kate, not worry, in Portugal most people see you as a "badalhoca" as Teresa say.

Maybe someone that know German let German journalists know what Kate write? I think they be very interested and maybe decide to do some detective work, that Kate like so much.

The German journalist were the first to ask 'inconvenient' questions.
It's my personal opinion that, due to the current circumstances, everything that Correio da Manhã has been published lately can be found in the files.

Niza said...

Claudia, is in Mr. Amaral book that G Brown call British policeman in Algarve to ask if Mr. Amaral already off case?

Cláudia said...

Niza, I think I read something about that but can't be sure anymore. I read the book in a hurry. Maybe I read it elsewhere. Will have to read it again, more attentively, when I'm on holiday.

docmac said...

"Docmac, If in Portuguese I only need 8 words!"

OK, I'll revise that. You'll probably need only 2. The Portuguese words for 'f*ck' and 'off'.

Cláudia said...

Doc, LOL
Niza was a great 'finding'. :-)

Niza said...

Docmac, Spokesman obvious never deal with Portuguese woman or he not say such nonsense and threats.

Cláudia said...

Niza, I have a feeling that if Mr Pink accidentally bumped into you,he would be unable to speak for quite some time! LOL

Cláudia said...

Bjos lili

Cláudia said...

A malta da Beira Alta é porreira. :-)

Anonymous said...

Cláudia said...

How are you?
Don’t know if you have already seen this, if so, you can delete it. I love the last paragraph!:)

Hi Clarence, I hope you are reading this and just to let you know, I think you are uggly and now, sue me if you don´t like my taste!

Moita Flores’ opinion article in Correio da Manhã today:

The truth of the lie

“Wasn’t there an incapable director around, one of those who climb at the cost of servilism?”

The book that had been promised by Gonçalo Amaral was sold out within hours. Those who have read it, or who are going to read it, will understand that there were all sorts of reasons not to accept the information that was circulated by the English televisions, that Maddie had been abducted, as the only one. If we go through the book in parallel with the PJ’s final report, we definitely realize that it was materially impossible for her to be abducted.

The intelligent abductor had entered through the door and then became stupid and left with the child through a half opened window, which had forced him to pass by the beds of the other sleeping children – that continued to sleep through the chaos of the search. As a matter of fact, if he left onto the street at the time when the witnesses say it happened, and taking into account the depositions that they gave concerning the checks on the children, he had to pass between the father, friends who chatted, who came and went. The book confirms a lot of what we have written here, along so many pages. The technical procedures do not differ from case to case.

They follow protocols that are informal, but so routinely that it is not necessary to be there in order to understand what is happening. Gonçalo Amaral’s team fulfilled them all, except one. He is generous when he assumes that mistakes, which was not his. Or at least, it was not only his. Gonçalo admits that he erred when, during a first phase, he handled the couple with extra caution. It is a mistake and a big one. But was it him who decided it to be that way? Wasn’t there an incapable director around, one of those who climb at the cost of servilism, giving that type of order? The fearsome are afraid of power first, and only then of death.

A case that was communicated by the English government, with the mediation of ambassadors, has forcefully to have a weak director in the middle, who mediated between the servilism before those who give the orders, and the despotism towards those who obey him. I foresee that in defending his honour, by exposing the truth that many wish was a lie, Gonçalo Amaral has not said everything. Even by assuming the mistake, he gave his body to the bullets, in order to defend his institution. I may be wrong, but one that knows the routines of investigation also presumes to know the mechanisms of subordination.

A final word for Mr Mitchell: the best that he found to say was that the book is a pretext to make money at the little girl’s expense. Coming from him of all people, his life has been nothing else, recently. People who cannot distinguish between a pound and the right to defend one’s honour. They sell themselves for any price. In Mr Mitchell’s case, for a good price, it is said.

I'm fine, thank you.
Hope you're well too. :-)
I had already read it, but our English speaking friends haven't.
Moita Flores rules! :-)
And by the way, I also think that Mr Pink is uglier than a hatfull of assholes. :-)

Cláudia said...

Ana said...

Kate’s notes: Mother of Madeleine did not like to be interrogated.
Kate irritated with the PJ in the first day
Kate McCann did not like the Policia Judiciária. In her first day without Maddie, a few hours after having seen her daughter for the last time in the apartment that they all shared in the Ocean Club, the mother of the child did not hide her discomfort in front of the investigators.

Dorme bem, Ana.
Beijinhos!

Thank you for your translations of the Portuguese press. We would be mushrooms, (in the dark), without you. The British side of the investigation stinks of obfuscation.

You must be looking forward to a well earned holiday. Perhaps niza take over your blog temporarily, if only to irritate Clarrie during your absence. !#!#@#! Clarence must be incandescent with rage at the hits you are getting on this blog Claudia. Regards and take care.

Ana,

Thanks for your posts re CdM. What a joke she is.

Claudia,

'And by the way, I also think that Mr Pink is uglier than a hatfull of assholes. :-)'

You do realise that is a compliment when it comes to describing him.

Cláudia said...

Hipohop, thank you.
But I can't take the credit for the translations of the articles. They are from Joana Morais's blog, who has been doing a GREAT job. Most of teh translations are from Astro.
I thought Mr Pink and the rest of the team were busy looking for Madeleine with the help of their so much competent private detectives. Certainly noone with a child missing would give a fuck to what a Portuguese citizen puts up on her blog.

Cláudia said...

Zodiac, yes, I do realise that. But I'm a generous soul. :-)

Cláudia, you have a point. Your blog "book extracts" may well make the sales go up rather than the opposite.

Keep up the good job.

I will link your blog to mine, if that's OK with you.
