Outrage over internet great wall of China
JACQUELIN MAGNAY IN BEIJING
31/07/2008 12:02:06 AM

CHINA'S vow to open up its country to the world through the Olympic Games was in tatters last night as an International Olympic Committee member, Kevan Gosper of Australia, apologised to the global press for misleading them about access to the internet.

China's Communist Party regime has put in place a reinvigorated internet censorship program blocking controversial websites for journalists at the Beijing Olympic Games while demanding that hotels implement an intrusive spyware program to monitor guests' internet use.

The double whammy of increased censorship coupled with the hotel spying flies in the face of promises for complete media freedom made by the Chinese authorities when they won the right to host the Olympic Games in 2001. It was a pledge repeated as late as April this year.

Mr Gosper, who is chairman of the press commission and deputy chairman of the IOC Beijing co-ordination commission, revealed that "some IOC officials had negotiated with the Chinese to have some sensitive sites blocked". But he said he was unaware of the deal and had inadvertently misled the world's media for months about the extent to which they would have unfettered freedom of reporting.

After late night meetings with Beijing Olympic Games organisers, Mr Gosper said he could not "tell China what to do".

Earlier he told the South China Morning Post : "I am disappointed, but we are dealing with a communist country that has censorship, and you will see what they say you can see."

Mr Gosper acknowledged that many previous statements about unfettered access and freedom of reporting had been wrong.

An IOC press commission member, Paul Radford, of Reuters, said it had been made abundantly clear at many meetings with Beijing organisers that journalists would have unrestricted access to report freely at the Games. "Journalists have a right to be angry. It will adversely impact on the way they can cover the Games," Mr Radford said.

The toughening of the censorship is being laid at the feet of the Communist Party, Beijing Olympic insiders say. A new level of political influence in the organising committee in the past six weeks means that some of the promises made to the IOC will not be kept.

A Beijing Organising Committee spokesman, Sun Weide, said yesterday certain internet sites would be unavailable to foreign journalists. Mr Sun didn't specify which sites, but when asked about the Falun Gong, he said any sites associated with that movement were blocked.

"Our promise was that journalists would be able to use the internet for their work during the Olympic Games," Mr Sun said. "So we have given them sufficient access to do that."

Mr Gosper said the IOC was taking a "good hard look at what Sun Weide said and the implications of that".

Another Australian IOC member, John Coates, said he was shocked that China would implement such censorship. "It is important to have freedom of the press and full transparency during the Games … but what the IOC can do about it, I don't know."

Yesterday the Herald was unable to access sensitive sites relating to human rights, Tibet and the Falun Gong spiritual movement. Other sites such as The New York Times , the BBC, Radio Free Asia and Taiwanese newspapers were unavailable.

Repeated searches for controversial topics on Google were also blocked.

This week journalists in Beijing were frustrated in their attempts to access the latest report issued by Amnesty International. Attempts to access information about tougher security measures in Tibet, were also unsuccessful.

A United States senator, Sam Brownback, revealed yesterday that international hotels had contacted him, concerned about being forced to install the spy system. He said the demands on the hotels to install the computer hardware and software meant journalists, athletes' families and visitors are subject "to invasive gathering by the Chinese Public Security Bureau".

"The Chinese Government has put in place a system to spy on and gather information about every guest at hotels," Senator Brownback said.

Complaints by the international media about the frustrating slowness of the internet at the Olympic Games main press centre have been interpreted by some that transmissions have been slowed by intense filtering of the world news agencies' copy flow.

Chinese officials said Games organisers had to work within the laws of China and any websites involving pornography, violence or matters of state security had been blocked.

The officials said this situation had been explained previously and that foreign media should be appreciative of the progressive steps taken to free up as many web sites as possible.

I don't know why but it sounds somewhat familiar and it does ring some bells. Do you think in China it will be possible to read and discuss THE BOOK? ;-)

See you, guys. I'll miss you.

LOL!

Is that China's equivalent of a MMU.

Cannot remember where I read the Team had top of the range technology to display the telephone number of anyone calling them and I think to pinpoint where internet users were. So if there is any truth in that their website was hacked, how did the hackets manage that.

Cláudia said...

Zodiac, ouch, they must have a full stadium of people working for them then. :-)
I'm not sure if the website was hacked into or not. If it was, I find it wrong. Guess the guy responsible for the thing was taking a nap. :-)

Claudia,

Typo: Hackers not hackets.

'Guess the guy responsible for the thing was taking a nap. :-)'

Well I have heard that he fell asleep when he was supposed to be working on another occassion.

Claudia, at supertroll's they are saying they have on good authority that letters have been sent out and that they are going after bloggers and forums. Please be careful, you've done a great job.

Cláudia said...

Anon, I don't mean to offend you in any way but LOL.
I also have some interesting things on good authority...

Anonymous said...

I also read somewhere that since the internet can be read in the UK, that they can sue people in the UK even if abroad? It doesn't seem to make any sense to me, but do you think this could be? That they could sue there and send people rogatory letters to Portugal? If so, I hope those letters get the same treatment here that the records the PJ requested and never arrived got from UK police.

Cláudia said...

Anon, I'm sorry, but are you for real?
You don't believe people can be sued for reading books, translating newspaper articles and asking questions, do you? Do you know that in order for Google/Blogger to be forced to disclose an IP address there is the need for a court order? Do you know that the first thing that would happen would be any blogger being contacted by Blogger saying that x and y should be deleted, IN CASE it is libellous? Do you really believe what you're saying? Are you one of those people who Mr Pink intimidates as soon as he opens his mouth or are you a different kind of 'anon', anon?
And you know what, let them send the letter, come here and sue me. Wanna take a guess who the first witness in court would be? :-)

Zodiac said...

Claudia,

Letters to bloggers and forums! What kind of letters, are they being sent via air mail or a cart and donkey!

I'm sorry Claudia, I don't mean any harm. I find there threats appalling and here in the UK fairness and justice don't always go hand and hand, particularly when you hire top-notch lawyers. I lived for some time in a country where there wasn't any freedom and this is worrying me quite a bit. Perhaps its due to my age, I don't have the same fight in me I had years ago.
I'm glad it doesn't scare you.
Keep up the good work. I don't normally comment on you blog, but have enjoyed reading you and those that comment on your blog.

Cláudia said...

Zodiac, the donkey seems a great way! :-)

Cláudia said...

Anon, if you are a legitimate poster (sorry, but the thing about anons is you never know), you are the type of person Mr Pink loves. They do not control the world, Anon. They cannot tell me or anyone what to read, what reading to share or what questions to ask. Where I live, people have fought for almost 50 years to have the right to question. The only problem some people seem to have with this blog is its title: PROUD OF THE PJ. Well, it's not changing. And it will be open again as soon as I return from my holiday. :-)

Zodiac said...

Claudia,

BBFN. Have a lovely holiday!

Cláudia said...

THANK YOU, Zodiac. I will. :-)

Niza said...

Anon, one thing is what said, another thing is what can do. They say for long time they sue this newspaper, they sue that journalist, but I not see any sues in court in Portugal. Why? They make threats but we still not see result of threat to Portuguese newspapers with much money than bloggers, why we think they sue bloggers may not have much money? They sue and risk much publicity over sue bloggers to get maybe 1,000 euros? Maybe less? Because judge in Portugal not make people poor pay 500 000 pounds. They not know this? I think Portuguese lawyers tell this to them.

Niza said...

Claudia, boas férias. Espero que dê para descansares.

Niza said...

Claudia, I just think this. I write on blog from work. What they do, sue company I work for? How they find out which worker use computer to write? They sue all workers? It be interesting to see how they do.

Then workers not write nothing sue them for harass, no?

Cláudia said...

Niza, the more important question is: when will they SUE the SOURCE of what the bloggers, foruns, newspapers, tv channels, etc discuss, that is the man who wrote THE BOOK, Mr Amaral? He is waiting to go to court discuss all this.

Vai dar para descansar, pois! Obrigada!

Niza said...

Claudia, if they sue me, I ask the writer of THE BOOK to be my witness. You think he help me?

Cláudia said...

Niza, all this is ridiculous.
I'm sure they will get you fired. And your company will be extinguished! LOL
Like I said before, guess who my first witness would be? :-)

Niza said...

Claudia, hihi.

Maybe they not know what "efectiva" mean.

Cláudia said...

Niza, lololol
Mr Pink has no idea what the Portuguese are made of. No idea at all.

Niza said...

You right Claudia. Never I see so much Portuguese comment on case as now. Threats made many not comment before now go on internet and write. I have friends never go to blogs, now go comment on newspapers coments because they furious with this. They get oposite effect of what they like.

Cláudia said...

Niza, we are a generous people. But we had enough, in the past, of people telling us what to do, what to say and what to think.

Niza said...

You very right, Claudia. That a big mistake for them try to do.

Cláudia said...

Niza, our ancestors have died so you and I could be born in a democracy. I was already born in a democratic Portugal.

Niza said...

Claudia, you see this about big board in Praia da Luz?

http://madeleinemccann.org/tfm/?p=1554

Cláudia said...

Niza, yes. I had seen that some time ago.

Niza said...

I not know they hire it. They say people do for themself, not that it hired by them. So much things not true.

Cláudia said...

Niza, to be honest, I'm already on holiday mood and I'm feeling like giving them the finger! LOL

Niza said...

hihi Claudia. I go now. Nice holiday.

supertroll said...

Hi Claudia,

Why are you closing the blog?
You go on about freedom to publish things, but you then announce that you are taking your blog down with the excuse that you are going on holiday.

What do you think is going to happen to it while you are away? Will aliens take over it perhaps?

You have comment moderation on, and you could even take the comments option out if that is what worries you.

How about asking Vile to keep an eye, like you did with her blog?

Closing the blog because you are going on holiday sounds like a lame excuse IMO, as lame as Vile´s claims of taking her blog down because it may interfere with (never going to happen) criminal charges and court action.

BTW I am not complaining. Your dreadful blog deserves to be out of the public eye and down in the gutter with the others.

But I think that the fact that the three nastiest and sickest anti McCann sites of the internet are going underground/out of the public eye, in such a short space is too much of a coincidence.

Everyone is talking so much about libel and legal action lately...Hmmmmm

Have a good holiday anyway, Claudia.

You have always sounded like someone who would benefit greatly if you got off the net and spent more time with some real people.

;)

Supertoll not very go in head, no Claudia?

Cláudia said...

ST, I have very good reasons to keep it closed while I'm gone. The most important of them all being that I decide what to do with my own blog. And another one I suspect with both know and that happened a long time ago with another person.
But I like to know that you're wondering about it. It's funny. And kind of sad. But hun, you can dream about it never being open again. Maybe if you pray really hard I may die during my holiday and you can get your wish. That's the only way I see that happening, sweety. You could get together with the other members of your Child neglect Support organisation and pray, pray and pray until your teeth fall out. Those who haven't fallen out naturally, I mean.
When I come back I may have a topic for the new thread. And I bet you're going to love it. :-)

What 3 blogs go underground? I only know 3 A now members only. That not underground. If like, can sign in, no? Other like that? I curious.

Cláudia said...

P.S: ST, sorry, forgot the lawsuit stuff. When my letter arrives (LOL) wanna bet who my first witness will be? ;-) Tee hee hee.
Now don't get used to it, hun. This will not become the ST show. I understand you feel very lonely in your sewer. But you will have to find a hobby or something.

Cláudia said...

Niza said...

Here is a recent comment by the Portuguese brainless one.

Blah blah blah blah blah...

You are right Claudia, blogger would not give out your IP address. It seems you do not understand the laws of the internet at all. What blogger would do is report your IP address to your internet provider...giving details of why they were reporting you. But more important is the fact google do not need to give out your IP address...it is up there for all to see anyway. Everytime you visit another site...you leave your foot print.(IP Address)

Hey, Bum

Not only have you a very poor grasp of internet law, you don't even seem to know how the internet actually works! How come you never spot my size 10s on your site, eh? lolol!!

Cláudia said...

Niza said...

Who Mum21? She Mum at 21 she need go take care of baby and not bother Claudia.

Niza said...

Andam a piratear computadores?

Cláudia said...

Doc, the old hag is not only ugly and boring, but also stupid. Of course that IF YOU WANT you leave your computer's foorprint (IP address). However, publishing it in any way is against the law.
What we ant to see, in reality, is Mr Amaral getting sued. All else is folklore. He is waiting and so is the world. The first thing Google/Blogger would do is contact the blogger and say x and y have to be removed. But hey, these are the people who think that leaving three under four year old children home alone is responsible, reasonable parenting.
By the way, since this is a sue party, they better be careful with the stuff they have about Mr Amaral. We also have letters in Portugal! ;-)

Cláudia said...

Niza, baby? She doesn't even remember how those are made anymore! LOL

Niza said...

Claudia, yes, we have letter and sues in UK give much more money!

Hi again Claudia,

Whatever happened to that person you mentioned, comment moderation stops this(I am assuming you are talking about Alsabella's blog being attacked by Arepa/muldoon).

You have no valid excuses, have you?

I would never use my prayers to wish you dead, or anyone else BTW.

I don´t know anyone who would pray for this this either.

I wonder why you would think me and others capable of such extreme emotions against you. You are wrong anyway, why would I or any of my friends hate you so much? what effect do you think you actually have on us?

Maybe you think these things because you judge others using your standards and patterns of thinking? Whatever you feel about us, it is not reciprocated.

The only way I would use my prayers regarding you, would be to pray that you get better one day.

Again, enjoy your holiday.

We will have died of old age by the time your lot get their act together....tee hee hee

Claudia,

have a good holiday. I think it is rich the likes of ST giving out advice re a blog when all it could do was disrupt and repeatedly post the same post. As long as the case remains unsolved the public will be interested continue to blog. See you soon.

Of course you are right Claudinha. She and her dumb ten pin bowling friend. You know, the one that uses smilies like a 14 year old myspace user, including ones that are designed to show us where her big fat bum is. What is up with that? Yeeeuch!!!

Anyway, off now. I need to go to bed and think evil thoughts. Enjoy your holiday :-)

Niza you need to get a ticket to Rothley or Bath. Don't forget the video camera :-))

'Everytime you visit another site...you leave your foot print.(IP Address)'

Or maybe an inconclusive one, how can you find the real person and proof they were the source?

Niza said...

Supertroll, if you not like Claudia blog, why you come write here? Not make sense, see? You not need to pass by it on way home, right? You can ignore, no? Or Claudia blog important to you?

Cláudia said...

No, you idiot. That is not what I meant. What I meant was far more serious than that. But that is all I'm saying. Guess you will have to wait and see. If my blog is never open again, you'll win. If it is, I win.
And yes, I do believe that people like your and your disgusting pals are capable of probably the most disgusting, terrible things. My opinion comes from the fact that most of you have defended CONVICTED child killers like João and Leonor Cipriano. And that says it all to me.
Now, go back to your empty little sewer.
